Maryland women's basketball coach Brenda Frese gets win 400

No. 8 Maryland's win over Detroit on Thursday was more than a 97-41 route. It was the milestone 400th career win for Terrapins women basketball coach Brenda Frese.

ABC News reported that following the Terps' win, there was an honorary video for Frese, which "offered congratulations from former mentor and Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly, Maryland coach Mark Turgeon, and former Terp and WNBA player Marissa Coleman, among others."

The Terrapins were led to victory by Kiah Gillespie, who tallied 18 points on the evening. The freshman said afterward what her game-time motivation was:

“I thought it was very important to play for coach, especially with the tradition that’s here at Maryland,” Gillespie said. “So to be a part of this 400th win is very special to me. And I know that she’s a great coach and that she’s going to continue to win if we keep playing like how I know she’s going to coach us.”

Frese has tallied 343 of those 400 wins with Maryland since joining the coaching staff in 2002. Five more victories will tie her with men's basketball coach Lefty Driesell for the third most wins by a Maryland basketball coach for either men's or women's teams.
