With the news of 3 players transferring from Michigan Basketball all eyes now turn to Trey Burke. The Detroit Free Press spoke to Burke’s father, Benji, and he told them where things stand with Trey and the NBA.

“Trey, he would love to come back, because he thinks they’re going to have a good team,” Benji said. “In the same breath, how do I pass up the opportunity of a lifetime, and risk injury? There’s risk on both sides. Anytime there’s risk on both and the NBA is one side, I don’t know if I’ll ever be as hot as I am now. If I had to guess, Trey would love to go to the NBA. There’s a lot of uncertainties there, as far as getting drafted first round.

There are varying reports out there that have Burke being a “first round lock” to a late second round prospect. The only thing working against Burke is his height. There just aren’t a lot of 5-foot-11 players in the NBA and if he believes the draft pool is light on point guards this year, he might decide to strike while the iron is hot.

On the flip side the playing experience he would get during a sophomore season at Michigan would be very valuable and help improve his draft stock. Jumping to the NBA could mean a stint in the D-league or riding the bench. Neither of those options will result in much meaningful playing time and could stunt his development.

When we spoke to Burke at media day we asked him about his epic training videos and what it was that drove him to work so hard. He said he was trying to make it to the league.

If Burke does leave it would put Michigan in a hole for next year with no point guards on the roster. His return would give them a Final Four caliber team.

One name that has popped up in light of today’s developments is Amedeo Della Valle from Findlay College Prep. He is a 6-5, 185 pound Italian import who has been waiting for a Michigan offer. Up until today the Wolverines didn’t have a scholarship to give. Another player being mentioned is Michael “Spike” Albrecht. He is a 6-foot-2 point guard who averaged 9.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.9 assists for Mt. Hermon (Northfield, MA).

Burke’s dad told TheWolverine.com that they expected to make a decision with 1-2 weeks. April 10th is the deadline for players to pull out of the draft and return to school.

The Wolverines do not have a point guard as part of their highly touted incoming freshman class. On the horizon they do have the highly rated Derrick Walton coming in for the 2013-14 season.
