JMR_Photography via Flickr Notre Dame head basketball coach Mike Brey once began his college basketball coaching career as an assistant to Duke’s legendary Mike Krzyzewski. Now that Notre Dame has joined the ACC in all sports outside of football and hockey, the two coaches will square off on the hardwood each and every year. And it appears some fuel is already being added to the fire. On Tuesday, Len Robbins of the New York Post published a recent interview with Coach K, who answered questions about the changes in the ACC. When asked what he thinks of Notre Dame’s relationship with the ACC (not being full members), here was Krzyzewski’s response: I think you can’t do something for one that you’re not willing to do for all in these type of situations. I would never have accepted personally them coming in and not being totally in. Why don’t Duke and North Carolina do something different in basketball? I mean it’s not right. I’m happy that they’re part of it I’m just not happy the way that they’re apart of it. They add value but, just being old-fashioned, [if] we’re playing cards, we all get five cards. That’s why they were never a member of the Big Ten. Krzyzewski’s response really isn’t that surprising — Notre Dame’s desire to remain independent in football has rubbed people the wrong way for many years. However, Mike Brey did not like the comments at all, and he contacted the South Bend Tribune to respond once he got wind of them. Brey was a bit bothered by comments Mike Krzyzewski made this week to @LennRobbins regarding #NotreDame joining the #ACC. — Tom Noie (@tnoieNDInsider) July 5, 2013 “Isn’t Mike Catholic?” Brey asked the SBT Friday morning. “We’re in this thing together, so let’s go. Business is business.” — Tom Noie (@tnoieNDInsider) July 5, 2013 “Let’s really embrace this. It’s a great league. Give John Swofford credit. I just have to respond on behalf of my Irish, and the Pope.” — Tom Noie (@tnoieNDInsider) July 5, 2013 More Brey – “There’s no question our brand will enhance the ACC as much as any brand currently in the league.” — Tom Noie (@tnoieNDInsider) July 5, 2013 Brey stressed that his relationship with Krzyzewski is “Great. He’s a great friend. But it’s almost like, enough, man. We’re in.” — Tom Noie (@tnoieNDInsider) July 5, 2013 It’s very easy to see Brey’s point: Coach K may not have liked the way that Notre Dame joined the ACC, but what is done is done. It’s time for everyone to move forward. Not to mention, even as a partial member, Notre Dame does add great value to the ACC, being one of the premier athletic and academic institutions in the country. We imagine that while Coach K’s comments did get under Brey’s skin, this “feud” will be over quite quickly. These are two of the classiest coaches in college basketball, who happen to have a great relationship with each other, too. Moving along.
