After the University of Minnesota did what was necessary and fired men’s head basketball coach Tubby Smith after seven underwhelming and nondescript seasons, Golden Gophers fans had pie-in-the-sky dreams of getting one of the hot, young head coaching prospects from the college coaching ranks, beginning and ending with Shaka Smart, due to athletic director Norwood Teague’s prior relationship with the Virginia Commonwealth head coach when he served in the same capacity at VCU.
Smart signed an extension with VCU and several other candidates, including University of Minnesota alum and former Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders, came and went before the Gophers settled on Richard Pitino, who was coaching at Florida International University after stints on the coaching staffs of Florida’s Billy Donovan and his old man, Rick Pitino, at Louisville.
It was universally greeted as a good hire, albeit a potentially risky one, but there appears to be at least one canine who fully backs Richard Pitino becoming a head coach with the Maroon & Gold: The Pitino family dog, Bernie.
Pitino uploaded a photo to his Twitter account of the family pet wearing a Gophers leash, so you know, in the dog-eat-dog world of big time college basketball, Bernie is all about Minnesota.

Fantastic. One question: Can either Bernie or Richard Pitino dance like Tubby Smith? That I would like to see.
