Story: Louisville had this game circled on its calendar for several weeks. Since losing an unbelievable five-overtime game in South Bend earlier this season, the Cardinals had won six straight — but what they really wanted was a little revenge. Combine that with Senior Night, and the KFC Yum! Center was riled up and ready to go.
The Cardinals controlled this game from the get-go with hot shooting and tons of defensive energy. Notre Dame had been playing great defense as of late — holding three of their past four opponents under 43 total points — but seemed to have no answers for how to slow Louisville’s attack. Peyton Siva pushed the tempo and made it difficult for the Irish, particularly in transition. This led to many layups and easy buckets — Louisville shot 51% from the floor on the night.

The last few days have been pretty awesome for Louisville’s Gorgui Dieng. He was named Big East player of the week and ESPN national player of the year over the weekend after posting 20 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks and three steals against Notre Dame over the weekend. Earlier today Dieng was named the Big East defensive player of the year.

Sorry for the delayed post-game reaction. As I’m sure you could expect, yesterday called for a celebration. With a 73-57 win over Notre Dame yesterday, Louisville has captured their second Big East regular season title in school history. Last year on Senior Day, Louisville came out and laid an egg, losing to USF. This year they played in a game where they had a Big East Championship on the line and the Cards did not disappoint. There was no need for overtime this time. The University of Louisville tagged Notre Dame with a 73-57 loss on Senior Night at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals said goodbye to Peyton Siva and Mike Marra and (perhaps) Gorgui Dieng in style and claimed part of the Big East title.
Senior Day a party for the Cardinals
The University of Louisville basketball program held a sweet going away party for seniors Peyton Siva and Mike Marra and (perhaps) junior Gorgui Dieng on Saturday.
