In one of the stranger incidents involving a student athlete in some time, 18-year-old Devonta Pollard, a rising sophomore forward on the Alabama basketball team, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, according to a report by WTOK-TV in Meridian, Miss.. According to the criminal affidavit filed in Mississippi in what can only be described as a very complex and bizarre case, Pollards mother, Jesse Mae Pollard, allegedly masterminded a scheme to kidnap a six-year-old child. The affidavit claims that the child was, indeed, taken from East Kemper Elementary School in Scooba, Miss., and transported to Alabama where she was released on the side of the road. The child reportedly knocked on the door of a nearby home and authorities were summoned. While Devonta Pollards role in the kidnapping and conspiracy are vague at least from the affidavit and the early reports authorities claim that hotel receipts and a cell phone related to the case were found in Devontas vehicle, a vehicle that allegedly matches a car authorizes have on video being driven by Jesse Mae Pollard during the commission of the crime. The 6-foot-8 Pollard averaged 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds and started eight games during his freshman season with the Crimson Tide, although he reportedly had not been working out with the team since the end of the season.
