Found March 25, 2013 on The B1g Time:

We explored the situation at Minnesota this morning on The B1G Time Podcast, however just hours after recording it's now being reported by that Tubby Smith is being let go as head coach at the University of Minnesota. This comes off the heels of a season that saw the Gophers make the NCAA tournament and win a game before bowing out to Florida in the 3rd round, 78-64.

Tubby leaves Minnesota with a 124-81 mark overall and a less than stellar 46-62 mark in Big Ten play. However Smith managed to make the NCAA tournament three years, winning just one game overall.

With the firing one can only expect the Shaka Smart rumors to begin firing on all cylinders and not just because he's a hot name in coaching, but because Norwood Teague - the new AD at Minnesota is the man that hired Smart at VCU in the first place.

Clearly Teague and Co. in the athletics department think that making the NCAA tournament every other year and winning a game or so during that time isn't good enough for their program and they will be looking to stake their reputations on this next hire.

Whomever comes to Minnesota will have some rather lofty expectations attached to him, fairly or unfairly and expect the leash to be short to say the least. Said person will also have some interesting pieces to work with in Austin and Andre Hollins, but they must also be able to recruit at a high level at a school that has never been an easy place to get top level "talent" into.

We'll have more on this as the story continues to unfold in the coming hours and days.

Never enough wins, or one of us, the Tubby Smith Era comes to an end.

The end came for Tubby Smith today, but I can't help but think of the beginning, that glorious spring morning when we all learned that a national championship winning coach, the coach that knocked the infamous 1997 team out of the Final Four, was riding in on a Lear Jet to save the program, create a national brand, and win a Big Ten Title. At least that is how it was supposed...

Tubby Smith has reportedly been fired.

It appears that Tubby Smith did need a trip to the Sweet 16 to keep his job. His team lost in the round of 32, and now Tubby Smith has lost his job according to Jeff Goodman.

Nelson, Gophers defining their identity

MINNEAPOLIS A year ago, the Gophers began spring football practice to a very clear tune: This is Jerry Kill's team. It was the beginning of the coach's second season in the Twin Cities. He'd recruited a class of players by that point, gotten that first 3-9 season and all the initial kinks of being new and turning a program around out of his system. And it was Jerry...

Former UK coach Tubby Smith fired at Minnesota

When Rick Pitino left Kentucky for the NBA’s Boston Celtics, Orlando “Tubby” Smith was hired in his place for the 1997-98 season. In his first year, he lead the ‘Cats back to the NCAA Championship game and defeated the late Rick Majerus’ Utah Utes 78-69. The championship run included a comeback wins over Duke, Stanford, and Utah on the way to Kentucky’s 7th National Championship...

So, nobody watched the Gophers?

Throughout the opening game of the tournament for the Gophers, the commentators spent the entire pregame discussing how Minnesota might struggle with the UCLA tendency to play a faster game, After the game was over, people were surprised that Minnesota was able to play as well as they did at the quicker pace. All of this was garbage analysis. It seemed that the Gophers were thrown...
