Rick Pitino has coached some pretty good guards during his nearly 40-year career in college basketball.  Recently at Louisville, there was Russ Smith, the two-time All-American, and Peyton Siva, the point guard who led the Cardinals to a national championship in 2013. He had a host of talented players at Kentucky, too, the school with which he won it all in 1998.  A player currently on Louisville’s roster is as good as anyone he’s ever coached in at least one aspect of the game, though, Pitino said today.  Pitino…”Chris Jones is as good as guard as I’ve coached.” — Andy Sweeney (@TheOnlySweeney) July 9, 2014 Pitino says Chris Jones is an “unguardable guy” right now after losing weight this summer. — Nick Stover (@ULFlyingCard) July 9, 2014 Rick Pitino: “Chris Jones among best guards I’ve coached from quickness/speed standpoint.” — Mike Hughes (@ITVHughes) July 9, 2014 Pitino: It’s taken a long period of time to get Chris Jones where we want him. We’ve tried to take 10 lbs. off of him to make him faster. — Nick Stover (@ULFlyingCard) July 9, 2014 Jones, who spent two seasons at Northwest Florida State before transferring to Louisville, averaged 10 points and 2.9 assists per game for the Cardinals in 2013-14. With the departure of Smith, who’s now on the New Orleans Pelicans, Jones will likely be relied on to be Louisville’s go-to scorer. Based on Pitino’s comments today, that shouldn’t be a problem for the rising senior.
