1. Xavier sophomore point guard Dee Davis didn't show much as a freshman, though he did get more playing time down the stretch. Still, he only had more than one assist in four games all season, and that was compounded by turnover issues. But in Xavier's opener - a 117-75 thrashing of Fairleigh Dickinson - Davis had a double-double with 22 points and 15 assists. The 15 assists is more than half his total from all of last year. 2. In Baylor's 99-77 win over Lehigh, Bears junior Corey Jefferson with 26 points and 13 rebounds. This was his 2nd career double-double, with the previous one coming on opening night last year. Five of his boards were on the offensive end, and four of them led to immediate points for Baylor. 3. One year ago South Alabama shot 0-24 from beyond the arc against FSU, but in last night's return trip they made 9-15 (60%). Junior Antoine Allen, who had his eligibility issues cleared up immediately before gametime, made 4-5 and led all scorers with 21 points. 4. Penn State will go as senior point guard Tim Frazier goes. In the Nittany Lions opening 65-58 win over St. Francis (PA), Frazier played his typical 39 minutes. He struggled shooting (3-9) but more than made up for it by getting to the line early and often. He made 17-18 free throws to finish with 23 points. His previous high for trips to the line was 15, in a win over South Florida last year. 5. Kentucky's heralded freshman class got off to a rocky start in a close win over Maryland. Archie Goodwin, Nerlens Noel, Alex Poythress and Willie Cauley-Stein combined to go 10-27 (37%) on twos, 1-1 on threes, and were responsible for 8 of the Wildcats 12 turnovers. Sophmore Kyle Wiltjer looked like the veteran, leading the way with 19 points on 4-6 3-point shooting and adding 6 rebounds and 3 blocks.
