When is does a #1 seeded team bust up brackets?  That is what the Syracuse Orange are starting to do after defeating Kansas State in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.

Many people wanted to leave Jim Boheim’s team for dead after it was announced earlier in the week that 7ft center Fab Melo had been ruled ineligible to play in this years NCAA Tournament.  The Orange’s National Title hopes definitely took a hit when the news came out, but that doesn’t mean they were just going to go away quietly.

It wasn’t a pretty win for the Orange, especially early.  The Cuse led 25-24 at the half, struggling to find a consistent rhythm. However, Dion Waiters and Scoop Jardine got it going, and the overall depth of Syracuse wore out the Wildcats, who were terrible most of the day.

The one thing that was glaring though, and something that Syracuse will have to figure out the defensive boards.  The zone defense already causes them to struggle to grab rebounds, but Melo being out led to Kansas State grabbing 22 offensive rebounds.  It was short notice for to lose their leading shot blocker and rebounder, but now Syracuse has several days to figure out what works with the roster they have to move forward is.

The second game of the afternoon is Gonzaga vs Ohio Sate.  Feel free to comment here.
