Score: No. 5 Georgetown 61, No. 17 Syracuse 39 Star(s): Georgetown: Markel Starks 19 Pts, 4 Ast, 2 Reb. Syracuse: Michael Carter-Williams 17 Pts, 3 Stl. Story: In what was supposed to be a highly contested final Big East regular season matchup between the Hoyas and the Orange, Syracuse may as well not even have shown up. That’s how Orange fans are feeling right now, at least. As was to be expected, both teams started out playing nervous basketball. Shots were too long, turnovers were aplenty and both teams played with a little bit too much emotion. But it was Georgetown that was able to calm down and finally start playing intelligent offense. An 11-11 tie quickly turned into a 25-18 advantage for the Hoyas at the break – despite Otto Porter scoring his first two points of the game on free throws with 24 seconds left in the half. As poorly as Syracuse played on offense in the first half, it was arguably worse in the second session. Georgetown got key baskets from Markel Starks and Nate Lubick right out of the break, extending its lead to double-digits just one minute in. And with just seven minutes remaining, the lead ballooned to 21, all but ending SU’s hope of a comeback. When it was over, the Orange had put up some historically bad numbers. Syracuse scored 39 points, shot 33% from the field, committed 14 turnovers and had just three assists. That’s right, three assists. Georgetown had 15. The Orange just flat out can’t get anything going on offense, and it’s really hurting them as the season comes to a close. Georgetown fans rushed the court (below) after the game, more in celebration of winning the Big East title and their final rivalry game against Syracuse than actually beating this SU squad. A decent showing in the Big East Tournament could land the Hoyas a 1-seed for this year’s upcoming NCAA Tournament.
