As the summer turns into fall we turn to the gridiron for our entertainment, but we also keep an eye on the hardwoods, as the NBA gets closer and closer. However overseas the leagues have begun to play already, and yesterday former North Carolina basketball player Marcus Ginyard started his season with his team, Anwil Wloclawk, a polish squad. From the former Tar Heel tweeted today, not only did his squad win their first game of the season by the final of 81 to 69, they did it on the road and by defeating an opponent that has a former Maryland player on it…
Great comeback, road win tonight. Awesome effort in the second half. Beat a former Terp in the process, even better #Anwil #Polska — Marcus Ginyard (@MG1NYARD) September 30, 2012
A blogger that follows the 6’5″/220 lbs combo guard/forward in Poland, Michal Falkowski (@MichFal on twitter), tweeted this to me about the former UNC basketball player in his debut on this squad…
@a_e_m Marcus had 10 and his teammate Lukasz Seweryn had 14 in the 4th Q and Anwil won a difficult away game 81:69 (47:58 after three Qs) — Michał Fałkowski (@MichFal) September 30, 2012
So, while Ginyard, who ended the game with 19 points (7 for 8 ~ 1 for 2 ~ 2 for 2), did not start the game, he proved his worth as he played the fourth quarter and was a driving force in his team’s win. For all the play by play of the game you can check out the Anwil web page. (Make sure to translate the page if you want to). From the Anwil web site it seems that the next game that Marcus Ginyard and his squad will play is on Saturday, October 6. I will get as much information as I can about the game in the upcoming days and of course give you whatever type of recap I can after the game is played. From a post on the UNC Pros, a site that as the name would indicate follows the former UNC basketball players (as well as other sports) at the next level, it seems that Ginyard is one of five former Heels playing in Europe and all are going to be starting their season this week. As usual more information about North Carolina basketball and/or football, teams and players, present and past, make sure to check back often on isportsweb!
