PJ Hairston had a tumultuous off-season with arrests for reckless driving and speeding, as well as, questions surrounding rental cars he was driving. Roy Williams announced that he planned to suspend Hairston (although he has not said how many games he will not play) as opposed to dismissing the Tar Heels’ leading scorer from the team. Jack Halperin, an academic tutor for Chapel Hill’s athletic department for 23 years, was not pleased with Williams’ handling of the situation. He felt Hairston’s off-court issues were enough to warrant being dismissed and resigned from the institution in protest. Halperin wrote an open resignation letter to Williams that was published in the school’s newspaper. “Roy, after 23 years as an academic tutor, and after going through the devastating football scandal, I am resigning in protest of your disgraceful decision to allow P.J. Hairston to remain on the team. If I were arrested driving with no license, illegal drugs and a gun in a felon’s car, my employment at this University would end immediately. Hairston’s DTH headline quote was, “I will play this season.” Since when does the criminal decide his fate?” Criminal? Harsh words by the tutor. Seems like he’s salty about a lot more than a couple of speeding violations. If PJ and any other Tar Heel athlete was employed (like him) and compensated for the millions of dollars they bring to the institution, then maybe Halperin would have an argument. While he’s out there pointing the finger and name calling, I wonder what skeletons are in his closet.

UNC tutor resigns, critical of Roy Williams

The P.J. Hairston saga has been long and drawn out, and there isn’t an immediate end in sight. Currently Hairston is indefinitely suspended after having several high-profile incidents with the law this summer. This week Jack Halperin; a tutor at UNC resigned while criticizing Roy Williams for allowing Hairston to stay on the team. In his letter he wrote: Roy, after 23 years as...

UNC Tutor Resigns, Writes Scathing Letter To Roy Wiliams About P.J. Hairston

Hairston North Carolina star guard P.J. Hairston will start the season on the sideline, serving out a suspension for an unspecified amount of time after he was arrested and charged with driving without a license, possessing marijuana and carrying a handgun. But according to Jack Halperin, a UNC academic tutor, the punishment is nowhere near severe enough. Halperin wrote an open letter...

UNC Basketball: Criticizing Roy Williams about what?

My esteemed colleague here at ISPORTSWEB, Femi Zaccheus, did a post about a letter outlining someone’s resignation over head coach Roy Williams’ handling of the P.J. Hairston situation. In it he brought up many great points. Before I give you my side, here is the letter that stirred a lot of controversy in web boards and social media outlets having to do with UNC Basketball…...

Heels in the Pro’s: NBA Recap… 10/06/13

The second day/night slate of the National Basketball Association is even smaller than the first one, with just two games to be played. But as will be the case throughout the year, if there is a game on there will probably be a former UNC Basketball player lacing them up. And, if that is the case, the following day there will be a “Heels in the Pro’s: NBA Style” recap, just...

UNC Basketball: projecting UNC’s starting lineup for the 2013-14 season

This is a tough one. After a down season last year by UNC standards, the Tar Heels are relatively deep heading into the 2013-2014 season. With that depth comes some difficult decisions that will have to be made when it comes to determining who the starters will be next season. There are a bunch of position battles going on as we speak, especially in the frontcourt. Point Guard: Marcus...

Why are North Carolina's ACC football teams so bad?

It’s been a good year in the ACC. Clemson and Florida State are in the thick of the national title chase. Miami is undefeated and in the top 15. Virginia Tech has moved into the top 25. There are marquee wins over Georgia and Florida. Yes it’s been a good year in the ACC unless you are an ACC team from the state of North Carolina. This isn’t something new either. Except for...
