In a letter sent out to the University of Maryland student body today, President Wallace Loh explains his decision to cut several sports teams from the University’s roster. Even with 10,000 email petitions from students, parents, and supporters since the story first broke out one week ago, the school has decided to go through with their decision. Effective July 1, 2012, the following athletic sports teams will be discontinued in order to restore financial stability to the University: men’s tennis, men’s cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track, men’s swimming and diving, women’s acrobatics and tumbling, women’s swimming and diving, and women’s water polo.
And don’t assume that the cut of these teams was warranted due to lack of talent either.
