This season was all about steals for #2, and is a reason why fans are so excited for Briante Weber’s senior year. Of course it will be devastating to see the contagiously energetic defensive star enter into his final year. The excitement of what more he can/will bring next season, on the other hand, trumps any grief fans may have. With 121 total season steals (115 regular and 6 post) he topped the charts and stayed there. With his 3.38 steals/game and national No. 1 ranking, Weber gave VCU fans big bragging points. Additionally he averaged at 1.83 steals/turnover and 4.75 steals/40 mins. Second place, Duke Mondy with Oakland, averaged 3.10 steals/game and had a total of 96 season steals. Compare that to Weber’s 121. This No. 1 ranking is a big jump from his No. 5 national ranking in the 2012-13 regular season. Weber was also one of 25 finalists for the Lefty Driesell National Defensive Player of the Year award. Although Lafayette’s Elfrid Payton took the prize, recognition with these other 24 talented players was an honor to VCU fans and surely Weber himself. In regards to VCU stats, Weber also broke the all time program record of career steals. He passed former record holder, Rolando Lamb, in the 22nd game of the season. Lamb’s record was 257 and Weber, already passing that number before, is now at 296 steals in his career at VCU. Weber is one of the best leaders on the Ram’s team. He will be able to use his positive attitude and unending energy to utilize the players he got experience with this season, and with the new ones to come. One of the best points to make about next season is that Coach Shaka Smart is staying. He has groomed his squad to be exactly the type of players he wants them to be and he aids them perfectly in playing up to their full potential. With Coach Smart teaching him and the rest of the team more, VCU fans should expect an even better season next fall.
