Unfortunately for Louisville lighting could strike twice. The night before the men’s team from Louisville won the Men’s National Title and the school was poised to bring back another title Tuesday night. The Lady Cards ran into a road block when the played the UConn Huskies. The Lady Cards lost 93-60 to Geno Auriemma and his team. Geno has now caught up with legendary coach Pat Summitt by winning his eight title. One reason UConn was the play of freshman Breanna Stewart. She scored 23 points in the game to lead the team to victory. Stewart won the Most Outstanding Player award for play in the tournament.  This marks only the fourth time a freshman received the award and first since 1987. “This is unbelievable. This is what we’ve thought about since the beginning of the season. And now to be here and actually win it, it’s a great feeling and I don’t think it’s going to set in for a while. I just played really confident and stopped thinking. When I second-guess myself, nothing good comes out of that,” said Stewart. On the victory and comparison to Pat Summitt, Auriemma said, “The only person I compare myself to is Pat Summitt and to be there in that spot with her means a lot to me. The fact that I tied Pat Summitt’s record puts you in the category of the greatest women’s basketball coach that ever lived.” The Lady Cards had a great run in the tournament. The team became the first team to make it to the title game as a fifth seed. Earlier in the tourney they upset Baylor and Brittney Griner in the regional semifinals. Cards coach Jeff Walz said, “The run we went on was remarkable and something I’ll always remember. We’re walking out with our head high and proud of what we’ve done.” UConn’s victory made the Big East conference win its ninth national championship. The conference, which will be no longer after this season and it ended its final season on a good note.
