After losing the women’s basketball national championship to Baylor Tuesday night, Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw had an interesting compliment (I think it’s a compliment) for Baylor star Brittney Griner.

“She’s one of a kind. She’s, uh, she’s like a guy playing with women.” Now that may not seem inflammatory, but the internet has questioned Griner’s gender many times in the last couple games. I can guarantee you that she wouldn’t have brought up the man vs. woman aspect if Griner was a cute little 5’7″ guard. I won’t go there, but I guess I don’t have to because Muffet McGraw did it for me.

McGraw went on to say that Griner is the best (women’s) post player she’s ever seen. Baylor finished the year 40-0 and became the first men’s or women’s team to go 40-0 in one season.

  • Muffat or muppett < Griner couldnt make most high school teams. Get real, you were just out played. Cheyl Miller would have ate Griner for lunch. As she goes inside flailing her arms around trying to draw fouls. Guys dont play like that. She is just tall, get over it.
  • I had the exact same reaction listening to her/him speak at the post game conference. I'd say she probably has as much testosterone in her system as any male. It was actually painful to listen and to think to oneself this is a female!
  • My husband and I were commenting that she looks like a man. I was looking to see if I saw any breast in their game on Sunday night and didn't see. I think someone should investigate.
  • I agree, has anyone challenged this, she sounds like a male has no female breast, and her feet are of male size. Testosterone level has to be high.
  • Totally unethical comment. It is sad that people have to stoop to this level, and not be gracious LOSERS. She had to be aware of the comments of some mental deficients who have been trashing Griner on social networks. Very sad indeed!!
  • the way you are taking what she said is wrong, you are now judging this coach off a 10 sec clip...i'm pretty sure she explained her position as she went on, because before it went off she said that she has an amazing post game and i'm sure there was more to that...this is the way that the media works to try to drum up interest in a story they don't give you what she said before that statement or after that statement
  • As a female athlete, one of the best compliments I have ever received is that I throw a softball like a guy. I think that many women athletes would find Coach McGraw's comment as a compliment, not discrimination or detriment to women's capabilities as athletes, or a personal knock on Brittney Griner. Men are better at basketball. I'm convinced that if more women played basketball like men, NCAA Women's teams and the WNBA would have more fans in their stands. The advantage women have is that they can get off the court and pretty up (if they want to) and be gorgeous and feminine and wear a dress as well as they wear a basketball uniform. We have the advantage and I hope all the little girls out there who are aspiring athletes are taught that!
  • Is she a hermaphrodite? Something's up with that chick, I don't care what anyone says. Can we see some elementary school photos and verify that this girl was really born a woman? At the very least, Ms. Griner has been taking some PED's. Balco anyone?
  • That's because Brittney is a guy. A husky voice and no bra straps. C'mon now!
  • Looks all male in this picture.

  • I watched her make this statement and felt that she was bitter that her team lost. Britney Griner cannot help the way she was born. Often, people who have growth issues also have endocrinological problems which may account for Britney's lack of apparent mammary development and her deep voice. It was no reason for the coach to make that statement. Britney Griner really does not play like any guy I know. She would not last long in a game with guys because she doesn't appear to have the physical strength to withstand the punishment of banging into guys on the basketball field. I think thats she's just a very talented young woman and she should be celebrated for her accomplishments along with the other young women on that team. How does the coach explain Skylar Diggins who is about as feminine as a female jock can get? Skylar is one of the best women players in the country. No one questions her gender. The coach should apologize to Britney Griner.
  • I saw the same interview and did not take it the way you did. Oh and I am not a fan of either of these teams or womens basketball for that matter. You sort of missed the point. Skylar Diggins looks female and is playing womens basketball. The fact that she is a good player has nothing to do with it. I will agree that it is unfair that this player is getting this attention because there are at least 50 women players across the country that the same questions could be asked of. They were just not playing in a national championship game in front of thousands if not millions of TV viewers.
  • I've heard that same thing said for years about girls from little league to high school and college. It was in all cases meant as a positive statement concerning the players abilities on the court as compared to other women/female players. Which in most cases is far lower than male players. However because of this person's appearance and deep speaking voice all of a sudden saying this is unacceptable to many. You know, lets see what we can get started. There is so much drama today that we are on drama overload and much of the time people's lives are destroyed as a result of it. Enough all ready!
  • I can't believe what I am reading. A lot of you people should go study and learn instead of being so stupid. There are a hundred reasons why Griner is who she is and being a guy isn't one of them. How cruel!! I am a die hard UVA fan but no way could I ever stoop this low. In case you have forgotten, ever since all this nonsense came up years ago, all these tests have already been done. Get a life and take defeat like you should. ND had a great year and now they want to blame anything because they couldn't get the job done. I wonder, if the same comments would have been made had ND won? Get a life. Congrats to Baylor Bears & Brittany on PERFECT SEASON!!!!! Oh, by the way go tell Iron Mike Tyson that his soft, squeaky voice means he is a female. LOL
  • so true
  • I completely agree with you, very well said! This whole topic is absolutely uncalled for. The coach went back and addressed the media regarding how her comment was taking out of content. Brittney, her family, friends & fans should not have to read and/or hear these immature slanderous comments. Enough of this nonsense and stop casting judgement upon others. All the teams played great and they all did a fantastic job. Congrats to Baylor on a PERFECT SEASON 40-0!!!
  • You don't suppose there is a reason Geno is balking at putting this player on the Olympic team, do you? They do tests before you can compete in the Olympics.
  • Female come on, this is a dude, plain a simple. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, this is cheating for the female teams and should be investigated.
  • I wish people would quit giving this young lady a hard time. I find her attractive and feminine. Her size dictates that her voice is deeper than most women. Please think of her feelings. Maybe you have something that could be picked on if you put your picture out for public scrutiny. I am a 5'10" straight male (white) and would have loved to have met her before her fame. Now she will wonder if someone just likes her for the millions she will earn in the pros. Was not a fan of Baylor prior to Brittany, but I am now and will follow her though the WNBA. GET OFF HER CASE, UGLY ONES!!!
