My Record-  11-1 in Week two and 22-2 overall.  My best pick was Illinois beating Cincinnati 30-24 and they actually did 45-17.  My worst was Indiana beating Navy.  As wrapped up as I get in IU’s offense, their defense is three kinds of awful. Michigan State-21 South Florida-6….CORRECT….After two games in the season your defense should not be doubling the scoring output of your offense.  This Spartan team is in big trouble.  Granted, the defense vs Western Michigan and South Florida have been dynamite.  Let’s see what happens when the quality of opponent gets cranked up a bit…I think the defense is good, but the quality of opponent should be factored in before everyone says they will be there down the stretch….and that offense….Ugh. Penn State-45  Eastern Michigan-7….CORRECT….The Eagles (Hurons) made it an interesting first half.  Actually, it was PSU QB Christian Hackenberg who made it look closer than it was.  His inaccuracy made the offense spit and sputter through the first half.  Needless to say, he rebounded…to the tune of 23-33 for 311.  On a personal note…I loved the uniforms for the Eagles (Hurons)…the gray matte finish on the helmets was pretty cool.  That’s about all I can hang my hat on for the alma mater.. Wisconsin-48 Tennessee Tech-0….CORRECT….Wisconsin QB Joel Stave through 29 passes…that is what I choose to lead off this recap with….not the fact that for the second straight week the Badgers had three HB’s gain over 100 yards.  Or that fact that Wisconsin has yet to  surrender a point to either of its opponents.  I lead with Stave threw 29 passes.  I was stunned…now almost a third of those came on a two minute drive at the end of the first half…but still…that’s a lot of passes for a Wisconsin QB…I wonder if his arm is sore….he may be day-to-day for next weeks game vs Arizona State…check back later for an update. Illinois-45  Cincinnati-17….CORRECT (thanks Jackson)….Did I tell you that Illinois QB Nathan Scheelhaase is going to have a big year?…I did….and he keeps making me look good.  He was 26 of 37 for 312 and he threw 4 TD’s and no INT’s.  The Illini seemed to be able to put a stop to the Bearcats running game, but what needs work is their pass defense.  Tim Beckman Sunday morning probably felt like a new man.  Say what you want, but that was a big W for him and his program.  If there is any way he can get a win in Chicago next week vs Washington, I think he might just get through the season….if he can beat a Big Ten opponent….and that my loyal readers,  is a BIG if. Iowa-28 Missouri State-14….CORRECT….The Hawkeyes snapped a seven game losing streak on Saturday.  It was the second longest losing streak of Kirk Ferentz’s career at Iowa.  He lost the last 8 games of his first season in 1999 and the first 5 games of 2000 for a gigantic 13 game losing skid.  But now that’s over…Iowa got back to running the football..they gained almost 300 yards led by Mark Weisman who had 30 carries for 180 yards and two TD’s.  Now things get a bit more amped up as the biggest thing to hit the state of Iowa since corn holders…it’s Iowa vs Iowa State week in the nation’s biggest cornfield.  Does it get any better that this? Purdue-20  Indiana State-14….CORRECT….Whew…it didn’t look good for the Boilers as time was winding down did it?…the Sycamores driving down the field…having outscored Purdue in the second half…but Ricardo Allen made a big play and saved the game for the Boiler faithful.  Congratulations to head coach Darrell Hazell on your first win as Purdue coach.  Considering Purdue’s blowout loss to Cincy in week one and eeking one out vs ISU…does anyone give them a shot to beat The Fighting Irish this Saturday night in South Bend?….I guess that’s why it’s a rivalry huh…any takers?… Ohio State-42  San Diego State-7….CORRECT….Uhhh..do you ever get the feeling that Urban Meyer takes his foot off the throttle?….me too…but Saturday it seemed like he never even put the car in gear….it’s like he took it out of park and put it in neutral and let Kenny Guiton push it until they got rolling….and then it never really stopped.  I am hearing that Braxton Miller’s leg injury isn’t serious and he could’ve gone if he had too on Saturday.  That’s one of those things that if you’re the opposing coaches, you might just be insulted if you hear it.  What do you mean ‘if he had to?’…he went down on the first series of the game?…yeah coach, your team isn’t that bad…it’s just ours is soooo much better. Navy-41  Indiana-35….MISS….Wow is that Indiana defense awful…granted, the Midshipmen run that wacky wishbone/veer/run-heavy offense (they only attempted 5 passes on Saturday) but they gained 444 yards on the ground vs the Hoosiers.  Five of Navy’s seven scoring drives were 64 yards or longer….hey IU..how about stopping the run once a half?..lets look at Indiana’s Big Ten schedule…do they play any running football teams?…week one-Penn State…uh-oh…..week two-Michigan State…uh…it just goes on like this…take care of business out of conference Kevin Wilson or improve your defense. Nebraska-56  Southern Mississippi-13….CORRECT….Hey!…Nebraska only gave up 13 points last Saturday!…and like their Legends division cousin Michigan State, their defense scored twice!…how about that?..good for Bo Pelini and his team for getting back into one of the drivers seats for division title…oh wait…it says here that Southern Mississippi is the owner of the longest current losing streak in FBS at 14 games….hmm…well, that might change things a bit…yeah, it certainly does….nevermind…nothing to see here…more Corn propaganda…see you guys at the end of another 9-4 season. Kain Colter Northwestern-48  Syracuse-27….CORRECT….OK folks..it’s time to take the Cats a bit more seriously.  You  kinda figured they would beat Cal on the road…but there was part of me that was thinking that all of the focus may have been on that game and you come home against a struggling Syracuse squad and the focus may not be 100% there…uh…no.  Northwestern had a 35-7 halftime lead and both QB’s (Trevor Siemian and Kain Colter) had gone 11 for 12 in the first half as it was an all out assault on anything wearing orange.  Northwestern now has essentially three weeks to get ready for their Big Ten opener at home vs OSU…stay healthy Northwestern…stay healthy. Michigan-41  Notre Dame-30….CORRECT….I will tell you what…that Tommy Rees is a pretty decent college QB…he had great patience and he was pretty darn accurate.  He was 29-51 for 314 and 2 TD’s….but the story was Devin Gardner..he was 21 of 33 for 294 and 4 TD’s..plus another 82 on the ground and another TD..it was a perfect performance…except one play…I was very impressed with the Notre Dame defensive line, but even more impressed with their offensive line…they kept the Michigan D off of their QB for the majority of the game.  Did anyone else who was there on Saturday night depict some daddy issues from Mark Harmon’s halftime speech?… Minnesota-44  New Mexico State-21….CORRECT….for the second straight week, the Gophers scored a TD on offense, defense and special teams.  Minnesota QB Philip Nelson only threw 15 passes on Saturday…but he did carry the ball 15 times for over 120 yards…and that is exactly the performance that Jerry Kill is looking for out the QB position.  The Gophers gained 342 yards on the ground and pretty much did what it wanted all night long on the road, in the western time zone….I told you guys last week…keep an eye on these guys…they are off the radar now, but keep watching them.
