Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd’s Heisman campaign truly was launched on New Year’s Eve of last year. His Clemson Tigers were battling the LSU Tigers in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome in a top ten showdown for one of the most attractive matchups of the college bowl season. Riding on the line in the game was an opportunity attain an eleventh win on the season, a top ten national finish, and a chance to jumpstart next season’s campaign with legitimate national and conference title aspirations. But impeding Clemson’s path was an extremely stout LSU defense filled with future NFL players and a 24-13 deficit entering the fourth quarter. In the face of such remarkable adversity and obstacles, Boyd performed admirably and displayed tremendous toughness and resiliency in leading his orange-clad Tigers to a 25-24 comeback victory. He demonstrated that he could absorb an unrelenting onslaught of pressure and still deliver in the most crucial of moments and with lofty stakes riding on the line. In Clemson’s resounding comeback 25-24 win over LSU, two major results instantly became very evident in the game’s aftermath. Tajh Boyd had launched his Heisman campaign, and Clemson had announced its presence loudly and clearly as a viable national championship contender. Boyd was nothing short of brilliant in leading Clemson from behind to victory in a watershed moment for the program. The odds were tremendously stacked against his Tigers late in the fourth quarter of the heavyweight feline clash. Down 24-22 with under two minutes remaining to play, Clemson faced a 4th and sixteen from deep in its own territory. Boyd withstood heavy pressure and delivered a perfect pass under duress for a first down; that play was essentially the decisive one late in the game. Clemson’s dramatic and narrow triumph over LSU last New Year’s Eve served as the platform in front of a national television audience for Tajh Boyd to initiate his Heisman campaign. The magnificent poise and resiliency which he exhibited in that thriller promises to serve him well in the Tigers’ looming top five clash with Florida State (Saturday, 8:00 pm Eastern, ABC). And those very evident attributes which he possesses promise to put Clemson fans and coaches at ease. No views yet
