Miami Gardens, Fla– The Miami Hurricanes won their season opener Friday night behind a 186 yard rushing effort by sophomore Duke Johnson to improve to 1-0 after beating Florida Atlantic 34-6 at home.  Johnson’s night was a career high as he was the fire behind the Hurricanes sometimes sputtering offense. The Hurricanes defense, which looks much improved from a year ago did not surrender a touchdown and gave up only 250 total yards of offense to the Owls. Next week’s game against the University of  Florida should prove to be a much stiffer test.  The Hurricanes offense will be the question mark after this game as they missed several key opportunities to score and senior quarterback Stephen Morris was inefficient connecting on only 15 of his 27 passes for a completion percentage of just 55.  True freshman wide out Stacy Coley can take some of the blame as he dropped two wide open passes, one was a clear touchdown. The defense had opportunities that they missed also.  On the game’s first series, Denzel Perryman the junior linebacker, dropped a sure pick-six interception that would have given the Hurricanes defense an amazing start.  Nevertheless, the Hurricanes were never threatened in this game and got out, what appears to be, injury free.  For more coverage, stay with CaneInsider for the next several days as we continue to provide content from today’s game.
