He’s maybe the most feared and most renowned defensive player in all of college football. Just a simple utterance of South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney’s name instantly triggers apprehension within quarterbacks across the country dealt the misfortune of facing him. Clowney has long been deemed a hot commodity in football circles, dating all the way back to his days of being widely lauded as the nation’s top high school prospect. And he has largely matched the expectations which outsiders had set for him at the onset of his collegiate career with the Gamecocks. He has generally proven to be the malicious pass-rushing force off the edge which many had anticipated he would become, terrorizing quarterbacks and wreaking havoc in offensive backfields with his unique combination of immense power and speed. His rare combination of tremendous size and athleticism has justifiably led some to speculate for several years regarding the likelihood of his being selected first overall in the NFL Draft following his junior year. But some recent missteps off the field which have surfaced could potentially jeopardize his draft stock. Jadeveon Clowney recently received his second speeding ticket for travelling at a rate of speed in excess of at least 25 mph over the speed limit. The fact that this incident marks the second occurrence in which Clowney received a speeding ticket undeniably promises to raise some eyebrows among teams slated to select early in the first round. Being selected among the first several picks of the NFL Draft undisputedly comes with a sense of tremendous responsibility to your employer, which will have invested a supreme amount of money in drafting a player with an early first round pick. Receiving the news of repetitive off-field transgressions committed by Clowney could lead some teams to doubt his worthiness for being an early first round pick. It could lead such aforementioned teams to question Clowney’s responsibility and to question whether his commitment level to the team will be altered after receiving his first paycheck worth millions of dollars. Such increased hesitation on the part of teams considering him could cost Clowney a substantial amount of money. Jadeveon Clowney’s talent on the field is undeniable, as he can instantly make a difference in any given game with his play. Yet some recent off-field transgressions have the potential to jeopardize the elite draft stock which many had previously considered to be etched in stone. 1 total views, 1 views today
