Texas A&M freshman Johnny Manziel is the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner. He’s the first freshman to win the award. His numbers were better than Cam Newton’s when Newton won the award, whose numbers were better than Tim Tebow’s when he won. It really shouldn’t have been as close as it was. While Manziel won by a decent margin, he was easily the best player in the country and also the most valuable player to his team. Without Manziel, it’s possible that Texas A&M could have been a 6 – 6 team. While Manti Te’o had a spectacular season, he technically wasn’t the best player in the country at his position. He is a very valuable piece of the Notre Dame defense for his leadership both on and off the field, and he may be the best overall defensive player in the country, he’s certainly racked up enough awards this season to claim that title, but what is the Heisman trophy about? Is it the best player in the country or is it the most liked and publicized player on the best team in the country? Manziel, while only a freshman, proved to be the best player in the country. He’s not only a freshman, but has a new coach and coaching staff at his school and that school is playing their first season in a new conference. Manziel has the big win over Alabama, and it’s safe to say that had A&M beaten either LSU or Florida, they could quite possibly be playing Notre Dame for the national title. As Greg Doyle points out: And here in 2012 Johnny Manziel is the best player in college football because he’s the best player in college football. He won’t be playing in the BCS title game, but that’s a detail. And not the most important detail. Not even a detail that matters a whole hell of a lot. Congrats to Johnny Heisman. Hopefully he’s able to take the award and use it as a springboard and return to New York after next season.
