Kansas State's Climb Up The Polls Should Continue as Favorite Over Kansas

By SBRForum.com

In a matchup of teams heading in decidedly different directions, the Kansas St. Wildcats host its in-state rival Kansas Jayhawk Saturday in Manhattan.

No. 8 Kansas St. was off last week and hasn't played since shocking the country with a 24-19 win over then-No. 6 Oklahoma in Norman as 15.5-point road underdogs. Struggling Kansas, under first-year head coach Charlie Weiss, has lost three straight including a 30-23 loss as 7-point road underdogs against Northern Illinois last week.

According to the latest college football odds, Kansas St. is favored by 24 points with the over/under listed at either 53 or 53.5 points at the few sportsbooks that are offering the wager.

Head coach Bill Snyder is in his second tour at K-State and once again has brought his Midas Touch to the “Little Apple,” as Manhattan, Ks. is known. The Wildcats are led by a rushing attack that averages 242 yards a game—good for 14th in the country—and an offense that is putting up 40.5 points a game.

Running back John Hubert and dual-threat quarterback Collin Klein have led the way for the Wildcats. Hubert ranks 16th in the country in rushing with 106.5 yards a game, while Klein has thrown for five touchdowns and ran for four more scores—including a three-touchdown performance in the Wildcats 52-13 rout of the Miami Hurricanes on Sept. 8.

For Kansas, the transition to the Weiss regime has been a disappointment. Under Weiss, who was once a Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, the Jayhawks are 103rd in passing with 191.5 yards a game and their average output of 21 points a game ranks 109th in the nation.

Quarterback Dane Crist, who transferred to Kansas from Notre Dame in the off-season, has been slow to grasp the Weiss system. He is completing just 48 percent of his passes with just two touchdowns versus four interceptions.

This is a rivalry game, so conceivably anything can happen, but it figures to help the Kansas St. cause that a bye followed its highly-emotional win over Oklahoma. If Snyder was able to get his squad re-focused, which he's been doing for decades, this could turn into a rout and an easy cover for Kansas St.
