Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is counting on a heavy dose of familiarity this season to help improve a defense that withered down the stretch a year ago.
Stoops' hopes for improvement start with the return of his younger brother, Mike Stoops, as the defensive coordinator. The younger Stoops led the Sooners' defense that won the 2000 national championship, but the D struggled in his first season back at the school last year after being fired as the head coach at Arizona.
Oklahoma was next-to-last in the Big 12 in rushing defense last season, allowing 192.2 yards per game.
Stoops hopes his knowledge of the conference, and a defense led by cornerback Aaron Colvin, will lead the way to improvement this season.
BEST OF MAXIM
NORMAN, Okla. -- First, defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said holding teams to 10 or 17 points in the Big 12 was unrealistic, making sure the bar was set a low, manageable level.
Hey, maybe it was just a guy going with the ole' rope-a-dope. You know, tell everyone listening the defense shouldn't be expected to do too much, not that anyone really thinks Oklahoma will be...
A day after announcing defensive end D.J. Ward is out with a spleen injury, coach Bob Stoops said sophomore defensive end Michael Onuoha is out for at least three games with a shoulder injury.
Onuoha, from Edmond, Okla., was expected to contribute on a defensive line that lost five players from a year ago.
The Oklahoman reported Onuoha had shoulder surgery and will begin practicing...
It's August and that means the Brennan Clay story is starting over.
We've been here before. So has he, and now going into his final season with the Sooners, Clay's story is becoming a predictable one.
Maybe this is the season something changes.
Because once more, it's fall practice and Clay isn't the starting running back and isn't the talk of the...
We're less than four weeks away from Oklahoma's first football game of the season.
How do the Sooners stack up so far? Here are the preseason grades by position:
Adam Shead, Gabe Ikard, Tyrus Thompson, Daryl Williams and Bronson Irwin are all back. All have started multiple games, led by Ikard, who was an All-Big 12 Conference First Team selection last year...
Tough news for the Oklahoma defensive line.
Already inexperienced and thin, coach Bob Stoops said Monday freshman defensive end D.J. Ward has not been practicing, due to a spleen injury.
Ward has yet to suit up this August and Stoops said, "We're unsure where that will lead."
That's a rough break for the Sooners who don't have a lot of returning experience...
The Sooners have a large offensive line and strong stable of running backs to help Blake Bell while he gets comfortable behind the center this fall. This will be crucial as Bell works to establish a rhythm with the offensive line-up early in the season. Bell himself will provide some additional running capabilities via the Belldozer and the newly installed read option.
A judge has dismissed most of a lawsuit filed by a contractor who says he was fired by Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy after showing up to work at the coach's house wearing an Oklahoma Sooners T-shirt.
Brent Loveland sued Gundy in 2011 for breach of contract and emotional distress, saying Gundy became irate and fired him over the rival school's shirt.
This could be a defining year for Bob Stoops and the new-look Sooners. Playing a majority of their toughest opponents away from Norman means that some of these games are essentially a coin flip.If OU can revamp their defense and get the football gods to smile down on them, then there is a possiblity to go 11-1 and win the Big 12.While 10-2 or 9-3 is more likely, the Sooners...
Texas came into the state and took the top in-state prospect for two years from Oklahoma. The Sooners are doing their best to make sure it never happens again.
