The first year of Bill O’Brien’s head coaching career at Penn State was spectacular when you consider all the attrition which took place shortly after the NCAA levied heavy sanctions on the football program in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal. The Nittany Lions finished 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the B1G. Due to the sanctions, they did not take part in a bowl game, and will not for next three seasons. This was part of the punishment, as well as a reduction in scholarships by 10 each year for the same time period. O’Brien is now attempting Penn State’s board of trustees to have those punishments reduced. It is no surprise that they would seek to do this. For starters, the sanctions handed down are some of the most severe in NCAA history, outside of shutting down the entire program. O’Brien had opportunities this past offseason to return to the NFL in a head coaching capacity, but turned them down to return to Penn State.
