A century before Daenerys Targaryen brought dragons back to the world, a legendary duo roamed the Seven Kingdoms. Their people were not the lord and ladies of the Realm. They walked among the smallfolk. History knows the pair as Dunk and Egg. HBO viewers will soon know them as the stars of the next Game of Thrones spinoff. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will tell a very different kind of story than its predecessors in Westeros. Now newcomers to the duo’s adventures have their best look yet at the two in action. HBO shared the first full trailer for the upcoming series, and it shows that even a more intimate story in the Seven Kingdoms is full of intrigue and danger. And also Targaryens.
HBO brought A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to this year’s New York Comic Con. (Which Nerdist brought to you thanks to our live-stream .) The panel, hosted moderated by Brandon Davis, included showrunner Ira Parker, George R.R. Martin, and stars Peter Claffey (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Dexter Sol Ansell (Dunk’s squire Egg). The network kicked it off with the release of a great new trailer.
The series’ inaugural season is adapting George R.R. Martin’s first “Dunk and Egg” novella “The Hedge Knight.” Martin has called the show “as faithful” an adaptation as “a reasonable man could hope for,” and this trailer shows why. It’s full of characters and moments straight from his story. And at the center of it all is the big galoot, Ser Duncan the Tall. He’s a brave hedge knight without an iota of self-preservation but with a very strong-willed young squire eager to serve him.
While Dunk and Egg’s story is rooted in that of the smallfolk, this trailer teases how the duo will still find themselves mixed up with royalty. (In more ways than one.) It also stars Finn Bennett as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen, and Henry Ashton as Daeron Targaryen.
The series also features Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Edward Ashley as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Youssef Kerkour as Steely Pate, Daniel Monks as Ser Manfred Dondarrion, Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossoway, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Plummer, Danny Webb as Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and and Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Barotheon.
How will a simple hedge knight find himself mixed up with all of those lords and ladies? Newcomers to this beloved duo’s story will find out when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuts at HBO in January 2026.
