The NHL has never been an A-list type of sport, so I guess it’s only fitting that they tab a B-list type of celebrity to host it’s awards show.  Or maybe Jay Mohr was the only guy willing to take the gig.  Hey, it’s not like he doesn’t have the time, now that CBS has cancelled his wholly unwatchable show, Gary Unmarried.

Whatever.  Really, who watches the NHL Awards show anyway.  Hey, maybe Jay Mohr will be super funny, seeing that he’s a comedian and all.  I’ve never seen his standup routine, but I’ve heard he’s good for a laugh…literally, good for one laugh, and that’s it.  But hey, at least he’s a huge hockey fan, right?

Ummm, not so much.

This is what he had to say about hockey back in 2007…

“Hockey sucks too. I can’t root for a guy whose name on the back of his jersey has no vowels. I also don’t think a sport is legitimate if its inception depended on the weather.”

Hiyo!  Take that, obscure European born player…Jay Mohr just owned you.

And then there was this playful little quote from Mohr from 2005…

“I am frequently asked who my favorite teams are, and I always give the same response: “Yankees, Knicks, Jets and screw hockey.”

HA!  I’m not sure what’s funnier, his dig at hockey, or the fact that he’s an admitted Knicks fan.

Sorry NHL, but you could’ve done a heck of a lot better than Jay Mohr.  Watch, just off the top of my head, here’s five people who most assuredly would do a better job than Mohr…

  1. Alex Trbek
  2. Mike Myers
  3. William Shatner
  4. Shecky Green
  5. The homeless guy on the corner who yells at clouds

Oh well, what’s done is done.  Jay Mohr is the host and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.  Let’s just hope he brings his smoking hot wife, Nikki Cox.

Jay, do us all a favor and be funny, be entertaining, and for the love of Jeebus, leave your wife at home.
