The Other Paper:
Notre Dame football has always mined the state of New Jersey for its blue-chip players but now the Fighting Irish will have a little Garden State blue-blood — via Brooklyn — under The Dome.
Jesse Bongiovi — son of Jon Bon Jovi, the famed Jersey rocker behind the anthem "Livin’ On a Prayer" — has earned a spot on the roster of Notre Dame’s football team as a walk-on cornerback.
"He's a tough kid. The kids really like him. They respect him," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told CSN Chicago.
"They don't look at him as a rock star's son. They look at him as a kid that loves Notre Dame and wants to play football and help this team."
"We have a lot of famous people, "Kelly added. "(Bon Jovi) could probably get in the stadium and put a hat and glasses on and make it through the game."
The kids of MLB star Torii Hunter and NBA great David Robinson are just a couple of other famous offspring on the team.
The 5-feet-9, 183-pound Bongiovi was a standout in both lacrosse and football at Brooklyn’s Poly Prep high school.
Bon Jovi, who has four kids including Jesse with his wife, Dorothea Hurley, is no stranger to the gridiron himself. He is a former owner of the Philadelphia Soul arena football team.
In April, Bongiovi told the website IrishSportsDaily that he adored Notre Dame, and expressed confidence befitting the son of a rock star.
"I expect it to be one of the hardest things I’ll probably ever do, but I like a challenge," Bongiovi said. "I like being able to overcome things and step up to occasions. Hopefully, I’ll get to persevere through something that’s pretty hard."
