The Buckeye Nuthouse is nationally known as one of the most dedicated fan bases in college basketball. So on Ohio State coach Thad Matta’s birthday, you knew they’d have some sort of surprise for their Buckeye leader. How about a season’s supply worth of Juicy Fruit gum? Why? Well, it’s one of Matta’s traditions, apparently. From theozone.net: “Always chew a piece of Juicy Fruit,” said Matta. “That one is fromOne Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. If you remember that movie when Jack Nicholson gave the piece to The Chief, he said ‘U-m-m, Juicy Fruit,’ so I’ve always chewed Juicy Fruit. Coaching does that to you,” Matta said. Matta was pumped about the gift. Coach Matta came back to the office from recruiting to a birthday surprise from the @BuckeyeNutHouse #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/NtnS49vhIw — OSU Basketball (@OhioStateHoops) July 15, 2013 It’s pretty cool to see the Ohio State student body so in touch with its basketball program. Perhaps Matta can return the favor with another Final Four run this upcoming season.
