PLAYERS: Ewan Mcgregor
Coming to theaters on March 1st is Bryan Singer’s (X-Men, X2) newest movie ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ starring Nicholas Hoult and Ewan McGregor. The film will be based on the children’s story of Jack and the Bean Stalk and encompass an all out war between the giants who live in the sky and the humans who live below them. Leading the charge to rescue the recently kidnapped princess will be the volunteer hero, Jack. This movie falls under the grouping of recent movie titles that have tackled classic childhood tales. Movies like ‘Red Riding Hood’, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, ‘Mirror Mirror’, and ‘Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters’ have all provided us with dark adaptions that aim to rejuvenate an old story. But overall have they really been effective revamped storylines? Granted, ‘Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters’ is due out on January 25th, but it does not look like it will make a successful box office splash even with its main star in Jeremy Renner. ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ looks like it will offer us something more. Maybe it’s a more complex story line or fantastic CGI, but I just feel like this one will break the folklore flop category. Also starring in the film are Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Billy Nighy, Eddie Marsan, and Eleanor Tomlinson. It is currently in post production.
