As you all know, I tend to be a sucker for most of the fan-written and performed songs that pop up on YouTube. Unless they are just supremely awful, I let my appreciation for the passion the fans are expressing override whatever cheesiness or inherent lack of quality may be present.

And so it is with this mindset that I magnanimously extend an olive branch to Kentucky fan ThePoetCDub for the following acoustic tune he posted yesterday on YouTube. He takes Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” and puts a UK hoops spin on it.

“Courtesy of the Big White and Blue”

—–

No, the song is nothing special (like the video posted below), but I do appreciate a cleverly-done spoof as one who likes to dabble in writing such songs myself.

I found the following lyrics to be especially clever:

I’ve been through Eddie and Rick, and Tubby too,
And even Billy G, but hell I still bled blue.

and…

We’ve got Miller and Lamb, raining down 3s.
Fast breaks led by Kidd-Gilchrist and Teague,
Jones is scoring, inside and out,
And Davis blocking shows with a…unibrow
So when you see that ball coming back at you,
Just know it’s courtesy of the Big White and Blue.

Some great lyric and rhyme work there, all while maintaining the integrity of the original song and displaying solid team knowledge. I approve.

And here is the other reason I’m posing this song and didn’t immediately dismiss simply because it’s by a Kentucky fan: it’s devoid of the typical Kentucky fan annoying arrogance. Sure, he seems confident in his team, as he should, but he’s not obnoxious about it.

He says, “This year my Cats…should take it all.” They are the #1 overall seed. That’s reasonable. And it’s not overly cocky like many UK fans tend to be. He also says, “And this year’s squad should have one hell of a run” right after espousing the virtues of team basketball. Can’t argue with that.

So, to ThePoetCDub, nice job on this. As an IU fan, I may totally abhor your team, but I can appreciate the passion, excitement, and execution.

That said, nothing tops this song, which I look forward to playing many times tomorrow in anticipation of the big rematch…and hopefully many times after.
