The 2025 Monaco Grand Prix is one that Red Bull driver Max Verstappen would like to forget.
A rule change in February likely cost him the race on Sunday. The FIA announced that drivers must make a minimum of two pit stops at the Monaco Grand Prix, which prevents them from nursing a set of tires to the finish.
Verstappen — who started in fourth — was leading on lap No. 77 of the 78-lap race. However, he had only pitted once and had to stop to avoid being disqualified.
McLaren driver Lando Norris passed Verstappen while he pitted, securing his maiden win at the Monaco Grand Prix. Verstappen finished fourth behind McLaren driver Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. It's the second consecutive year he hasn't finished on the podium in Monte Carlo.

After the race, Verstappen criticized the rule change.
"You can't race here," Verstappen told Sky Sports F1 (h/t Amos Murphy of Express). "Even at the end, I was in the lead, my tires were completely gone, and you still can't pass. I think nowadays, with an F1 car, you can just pass about an F2 car around here. I don't think it has worked [the new rule]."
The 27-year-old Dutch driver doesn't think having the pit stops in a specific window would solve the problem.
"Then we would be doing 'Mario Kart,'" Verstappen said. "Then we have to install bits on the car so we can throw bananas around a slippery surface. I could have done four stops and still been in the same position, but that's Monaco for you."
Verstappen's comments could paint him as a sore loser, but he's not the only driver who complained about the rule change. Per ESPN's Nate Saunders, Leclerc — the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix winner — said it would create "chaos."
An underwhelming season for Verstappen — a four-time world champion — has probably frustrated him even more. After Monaco, he is third in the driver standings behind Norris (158 points) and Piastri (161 points), with 136 points. He also has won just two races this season.
With sudden rule changes and another disappointing result, it's no wonder Verstappen felt like he was playing "Mario Kart" on Sunday.
