When Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy began the year, no one had this in mind for their rivalry. They made their debut in Abu Dhabi last month and both missed the cut. The played in the same tournament last week in the Match Play Championship, and both were eliminated in the first round. The difference is that Woods returned to Torrey Pines the week after missing the cut and left little reason for anyone to doubt the state of his game when he built a lead that reached eight shots until the day dragged on and he won by four for his 75th career PGA Tour win. But the start of the Florida swing is no time to panic, and McIlroy sure doesn't sound worried at the Honda Classic.

Tiger saves par after slick shot out of water

Overall, Tiger Woods had a pedestrian round of 70 during the first round of play of the Honda Classic on Thursday at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course. While a 70 was good for an even par round and only five off the pace of co-leaders Graham DeLaet and Branden Grace (who?) heading into Friday’s action, meaning Tiger is well within striking distance, that does not mean...

Rory McIlroy Walks Off Course, Quits Honda Classic Without Making It Through Nine Holes on Second Day

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Rory McIlroy‘s rough start to the year has taken a bad turn. He withdrew from the Honda Classic on Friday without finishing nine holes. McIlroy already was 7-over for eight holes at PGA National and certain to miss another cut. He hit his second shot into the water on the par-5 18th and was done for the week. He told reporters as he walked to the parking...

Rory McIlroy’s trick shot at Bose announcement

On Wednesday, Bose and Rory McIlroy announced a new sponsorship agreement.  McIlroy has had to be a bit more choosy with his sponsorships since he signed a mega-deal with Nike.  During the announcement, McIlroy brought out two wedges and bounced a golf ball back and forth and balanced the ball on the back of one of them.  Very impressive no doubt, and extremely difficult considering...

Tiger Woods’ Barefoot Shot Leads Golfer to Change Clothes on Course, Puts Him on Track to Save Par (Video)

That fella disrobing near the bushes on an overcast day at the golf course? Well, that’s just Tiger Woods. Woods had to adjust his playing attire a bit when taking on the sixth hole at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens on Wednesday. He had knocked his drive next to a water hazard and looked likely to take a drop. While many a golfer would have taken the extra stroke, Woods...

McIlroy's shaky '13 start grows worse

Rory McIlroy's rough start to the year took a bad turn when he withdrew from the Honda Classic midway through his second round, citing a sore wisdom tooth. McIlroy already was 7-over for eight holes at PGA National and certain to miss another cut. "I sincerely apologize," McIlroy said. "I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out...

Tiger opens Honda Classic at even par

Tiger Woods' last competitive round at PGA National was the best Sunday of his career, a remarkable round capped by an eagle that almost allowed him to catch the player trying to become No. 1 in the world. His round Thursday was less eventful. Woods, who closed the Honda Classic last year with a 62 that left him two shots behind Rory McIlroy, opened the event this year with...

Rory McIlroy walks off, withdraws from Honda Classic due to…’sore wisdom tooth’?

(Photo credit: REUTERS/Doug Murray) Much like what occurred in the 2012 season which preceded it, the beginning of Rory McIlroy’s 2013 campaign has gotten off to an inauspicious start. After playing barely well enough on Thursday for an even-par 70, McIlroy was struggling mightily during the first round of the Honda Classic. It continued on Friday, as the PGA National Golf Club’s...

Rory McIlroy Needs to Grow Up

I’ll make this plain from the get-go…I’m not a Rory McIlroy fan.  I think he’s got the best skillset of any golfer on Tour, is unbelievably good throughout the bag and, when he’s on fire, is literally untouchable…that said, unless you’re John Daly or Michelle Wie, you do not walk out of a golf tournament where you’re not injured.  You just don’t.  For every Rory...

McIlroy picks up ball and leaves course

Rory McIlroy went straight to his car and left the course on his ninth hole friday, withdrawing from the Honda Classic after going 7 over par. McIlroy told reporters in the parking lot that "I'm not in a great place mentally. I can't really say much, guys.
