Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Adam Scott, and Phil Mickelson. These are guys you would expect to be near the top of the FedEx Cup standings with two events left. Given the way they have played this year, it’s not shocking they are in the top ten. But what is somewhat surprising is the guy they are all chasing heading into the penultimate FedEx Cup event. Tournament: BMW Championship Location: Conway Farms GC, Lake Forest, IL Dates: 9/12/13 – 9/15/13 Henrik Stenson is atop the FedEx Cup standings at the right time. It seems like Tiger has been the lead horse forever, but Stenson is peaking at the right time. He has finished in the top three in four out of his last five events and he won the Deutsche Bank a couple weeks ago in impressive fashion. Can Henny Stenny really pull off the improbable and win the FedEx Cup, seemingly coming out of nowhere? You bet he can. It’s always been my theory that consistency is what wins you a FedEx Cup. Playing near the top every week gets you in the right position for the September stretch run. And that’s exactly what Stenson has done. Take someone like Tiger, however. When he has been on his game this year, he is the best in the world. But when he has been off a little bit, it’s not really close. The aforementioned Deutsche Bank comes to mind. He didn’t have it going on and finished well back of the leaders. Not very consistent. Speaking of Tiger, it will be interesting to see how this week plays out. As we all know, he has a handful of courses that he is particularly fond of. Courses like Bay Hill, Firestone, and Torrey Pines. These are places where he does his best work. Well, this week does not feature one of those courses. In fact, this is the PGA Tour debut for Conway Farms. So far Tiger has said the right things about the course, but then again, when DOESN’T he do that? I don’t think he will win, but he has done more than enough to stay in the top five heading to the Tour Championship. Plus he tends to do well in smaller field events. This week there are only 70 players, so the set-up is similar to a WGC event. Tiger typically has strong showings there. I think Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar also end up in the all-important top five and thus control their own destiny. For those that don’t remember, if you are in the top five of the FedEx Cup standings heading into Atlanta, a win gets you the cup. Who is my fifth? I like Jordan Spieth. This kid has been unflappable this year and why would this week be any different? It would be a great story to see a guy that wasn’t even on Tour to start the season contending for a FedEx Cup against the likes of Tiger and Phil. Hollywood: I can start writing a script now, but I will need a $2 million advance check. On Tap Recommendation: See if you can track down a Goose Island Octoberfest this weekend, I promise you won’t be disappointed. You get to sample a local Chicago beer and ease your way into fall with a nice Octoberfest. Cheers everyone!
