Halfway through the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, there are many players making headlines. Kenny Perry, Tom Watson, and Neal Lancaster are three Senior Tour players that have made the cut. Perry has been playing well as of late with this week and his victory at last week’s Senior Players Championship. Lancaster just turned 50 last September and has conditional status on the Champion’s Tour. Watson seems as spry as ever at 63 years old while he said in an interview that he would like to win the tournament to become the oldest champion in the PGA Tour’s history. Matt Every is the leader at 9-under par after shooting the tournament’s third 62 of the week and leading the field in greens in regulation. Old White TPC has been a bit soggy the first few days of the tournament and it has shown it is susceptible to low scores and will most likely continue to do so. Nipping at the heels of Every is a slew of 25 players who are within four shots of the lead. A few players having success this week like Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey and Daniel Summerhays, have noted in interviews that they are just trying to have some fun this week because they have been putting too much pressure on themselves. The two have taken different approaches though. Gainey had a talk with his family coming into the week to determine what was the matter with his attitude on the golf course, while Summerhays did some soul searching and decided he is just going to try and pick targets and let his body do the rest. The weekend looks to have some post Fourth of July fireworks in store for us with so many players in solid contention. It’s hard not to root for players like Gainey and Summerhays who have been through the up and downs of the Tour grind only to find that the real secret to playing good golf on such a large stage is to put things in perspective and quit letting themselves get in their own way. These players gain my personal respect for sticking with it through thick and thin, and hopefully they will remember the words of Dr. Bob Rotella from his book Golf is Not a Game of Perfect, “On the first tee, a golfer must expect only two things of himself: to have fun, and to focus his mind properly on every shot.”
