I’ll make this plain from the get-go…I’m not a Rory McIlroy fan.  I think he’s got the best skillset of any golfer on Tour, is unbelievably good throughout the bag and, when he’s on fire, is literally untouchable…that said, unless you’re John Daly or Michelle Wie, you do not walk out of a golf tournament where you’re not injured.  You just don’t.  For every Rory-superstar, there are dozens of guys on the web.com (nee: Nationwide) Tour or on minitours who would LITERALLY kill a man to get a chance to play in this kind of tournament. Despite it’s reputation as a lily-white ***** “game,” golf has a legacy of steel-faced badasses, and tournament golf itself weeds out the mentally weak from the outset unless a golfer has such an incredible amount of talent, they can win without resiliency.  Hell, even the poster child for ***** golfers, Colin Montgomerie, is a tough as nails son of a ***** between the ropes who, despite his lack of talent, didnt give an inch to anyone. From Ben Hogan winning a US Open 18 months after having his body wrecked to Tiger Woods winning a US Open on a mangled leg to Hubert Green [...]

Rory McIlroy Walks Off Course, Quits Honda Classic Without Making It Through Nine Holes on Second Day

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Rory McIlroy‘s rough start to the year has taken a bad turn. He withdrew from the Honda Classic on Friday without finishing nine holes. McIlroy already was 7-over for eight holes at PGA National and certain to miss another cut. He hit his second shot into the water on the par-5 18th and was done for the week. He told reporters as he walked to the parking...

McIlroy's shaky '13 start grows worse

Rory McIlroy's rough start to the year took a bad turn when he withdrew from the Honda Classic midway through his second round, citing a sore wisdom tooth. McIlroy already was 7-over for eight holes at PGA National and certain to miss another cut. "I sincerely apologize," McIlroy said. "I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out...

Rory McIlroy walks off, withdraws from Honda Classic due to…’sore wisdom tooth’?

(Photo credit: REUTERS/Doug Murray) Much like what occurred in the 2012 season which preceded it, the beginning of Rory McIlroy’s 2013 campaign has gotten off to an inauspicious start. After playing barely well enough on Thursday for an even-par 70, McIlroy was struggling mightily during the first round of the Honda Classic. It continued on Friday, as the PGA National Golf Club’s...

McIlroy, Woods start their road to the Masters

When Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy began the year, no one had this in mind for their rivalry. They made their debut in Abu Dhabi last month and both missed the cut. The played in the same tournament last week in the Match Play Championship, and both were eliminated in the first round. The difference is that Woods returned to Torrey Pines the week after missing the cut and left little...

McIlroy leaves, Guthrie leads and Woods struggles

Rory McIlroy left before his round was even over. Tiger Woods had to rally just to stick around. And with all that drama Friday in the Honda Classic, hardly anyone noticed that Luke Guthrie showed off his potential in a big way with a 7-under 63 to take a one-shot lead going into the weekend at PGA National. Guthrie, pegged by many of his peers as a rookie worth watching going...

McIlroy feeling pressures of being No. 1

In any other sport it wouldn't be an issue. LeBron James isn't going to forget how to dunk, and Roger Federer won't suddenly lose his forehand smash. Michael Phelps isn't likely to sink to the bottom of the pool, either. But this is golf, a game so mental it can sometimes seem impossible. And Rory McIlroy is in trouble. Not with the U.S. PGA Tour, even though he...

McIlroy picks up ball and leaves course

Rory McIlroy went straight to his car and left the course on his ninth hole friday, withdrawing from the Honda Classic after going 7 over par. McIlroy told reporters in the parking lot that "I'm not in a great place mentally. I can't really say much, guys.

Tiger Woods scrambles to make cut at Honda

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. Tiger Woods nearly had a second straight free weekend to play some leisurely golf with Rory McIlroy. But a sand save at No. 17 and a scramble for par at No. 18 on Friday enabled Woods to finish 36 holes at even par right on the cut line and stay alive at The Honda Classic. Earlier, world No. 1 McIlroy withdrew in the middle of his ninth hole, citing...

Nike deal adds to Rory's pressures
