(Photo credit: REUTERS/Doug Murray) Much like what occurred in the 2012 season which preceded it, the beginning of Rory McIlroy’s 2013 campaign has gotten off to an inauspicious start. After playing barely well enough on Thursday for an even-par 70, McIlroy was struggling mightily during the first round of the Honda Classic. It continued on Friday, as the PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. did the world’s No. 1 golfer no favors. McIlroy, beginning his second round on the back nine, walked off the course after the 18th hole sitting at 7 over par after two bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple bogey completely derailed his round. The reason provided for McIlroy’s hasty departure? “Sore wisdom tooth.” Yep. Speaking to reporters as he walked to his car, Rory McIlroy did not mention any wisdom tooth pain. He simply said, “There’s not really say much I can say, guys,” adding, “I’m not in a good place mentally, you know?” The aforementioned wisdom tooth issue was addressed in a curious, somewhat contradictory statement from McIlroy that was released by the PGA Tour which read: “I sincerely apologize to The Honda Classic and PGA Tour for my sudden withdrawal. I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out in the near future. It began bothering me again last night, so I relieved it with Advil. It was very painful again this morning, and I was simply unable to concentrate. It was really bothering me and had begun to affect my playing partners.” Well, if Rory truly does have a wisdom tooth pain issue, it’s simple: Advil ain’t going to cut it. As a person who has dealt with wisdom teeth issues in the past, about the only thing Advil is going to accomplish is remind you that Advil is virtually worthless when confronted with intolerable mouth pain. Morphine would be a great help, though. Otherwise, the only other viable recourse is to get that thing yanked, man. McIlroy did take to Twitter to address his withdrawal: Apologies to all at the Honda. A tough day made impossible by severe tooth pain. Was desperate to defend title but couldn’t play on. Gutted — Rory Mcilroy (@McIlroyRory) March 1, 2013 Gutted, indeed. Yet another example of a preferable alternative when compared to wisdom tooth pain. Not really, of course, but you know what I’m getting at… [USA Today] TweetThe post Rory McIlroy walks off, withdraws from Honda Classic due to…’sore wisdom tooth’? appeared first on Sportress of Blogitude.
