Sepp Straka became only the second player to win multiple times on the PGA Tour this season after seeing off Shane Lowry to win the Truist Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Straka joins Rory McIlroy’s exclusive club after winning his second title on the PGA Tour this year. The Austrian posted a final-round 68 to get to 16-under for the week, continuing his impressive form in 2025.
Shane Lowry was looking to win his first individual PGA Tour title since 2019. The 38-year-old won the 2024 Zurich Classic team event alongside Rory McIlroy but hasn’t won an individual PGA Tour title since the 2019 Open Championship. Lowry will be disappointed after finishing second to McIlroy at Pebble Beach and now finishing tied for second at the Truist Championship. Meanwhile, Straka won The American Express in just his third start of the season and has now added the Truist Championship to his trophy cabinet.
“It’s hard to eat with the pressure. You feel nauseous but that’s kind of what makes it fun, when you’re pulling off the shots with that pressure, it makes it special,” Straka told reporters shortly after the victory. “I think just hanging in there, I hit a lot of really good shots and made a lot of mistakes. I had a two-shot lead and made two bogeys on the next two holes to lose it, but I kept the same attitude and mentality throughout the round.”
Straka held his nerve late on to grab a two-shot win over Lowry and the rest of the field to secure the Truist Championship. The two rivals were ahead of the field on Saturday after building a three-shot lead at the 54-hole mark. However, their lead disappeared in no time in the final round despite Lowry carding a birdie at the opening hole.
Lowry then made the turn at 1-under on the day but it looked like Straka was strolling to victory. The 32-year-old eagled the par-5 fifth and then carded back-to-back birdies at the turn to build up a two-shot lead. However, the Austrian blew the race wide open after hitting back-to-back bogeys.
Straka’s bogeys kept him and Lowry neck-to-neck and allowed Justin Thomas to stay within striking distance. But Thomas missed two very makeable putts, one for birdie and another for par, to effectively end his hopes of winning the championship where he eventually finished tied for second at 14-under.
