Tiger Woods had been leading the charge for golf to outlaw "anchored putting" from the sport and was hoping that end of the so-called "belly-putters" came to an end Wednesday. Woods, speaking Tuesday at a press conference for the World Challenge, said," The art of putting is swinging the clubs and controlling nerves. "Using a fixed point is not in the traditions of the game," he added. Woods got his wish — somewhat. An announcement was made Wednesday morning, during a media conference call by the U.S. Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club — golf's two ruling bodies — that said a new rule would not outlaw belly putters or broom-handle putters, only the way they are currently used. It sounds like Woods got a mulligan on his call to arms. The proposed rule would make it illegal for golfers to anchor the club while making a stroke. The new ruling will not take effect until Jan. 1 2016. Woods' complaint is the bane of many other golfers.  The belly putter, in which a player presses the butt end of the grip into the stomach area, has created quite a controversy in recent tournaments.   Three of the winners —  Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson and Ernie Els — of the past five major championships have used it, and elite amateurs are picking up the specialized putters in greater numbers as well. Proponents say the belly putters help stabilize the club during the stroke, while opponents say it gives an unfair advantage. "I don't know if there's any statistical data on it, but I'm sure there is somewhere about whether or not anchoring the putter does help on a certain range of putts," said Woods.  "Especially the guys who have gotten the twitches a little bit." It appears that despite the new rules, the two sides are still not on the same course. "The game has been around for 600 years," said USGA executive Mike Davis.  "Fundamentally, we don't think this is the right way to go."

Woods not interested in European membership

Tiger Woods says he won't be joining the European Tour. Woods had floated the possibility while in Turkey last month, especially now that the tour would count the Ryder Cup toward the minimum requirement of 13 events for membership. When asked about it Tuesday, Woods said, ''I'm not going to play the European Tour next year.'' He says even adding a few extra...

Nerves should be part of putting

Tiger Woods has had it right all along, and golf's ruling bodies finally have it right, too. Anchoring a putter against the body contravenes the spirit of the game. And now it will contravene the rules, too. In a move that will cause seismic divisions throughout professional golf -- and bring anxiety attacks to Sunday morning hackers with the yips -- belly and broomstick putters...

Bradley miffed, motivated by putter flap

Tiger Woods walked across the putting green at Sherwood Country Club on a dreary Thursday afternoon, and Keegan Bradley was ready for him. "Hey, Tiger, the boys want to see you use this," Bradley said mischievously, pointing to his belly putter. "Pfft!" said Woods, "You need to cut that thing down." It was a good-natured exchange, reflecting the ribbing...

Same questions, but for a different player

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By DOUG FERGUSON AP Golf Writer A little more than three months ago, Tiger Woods was on his way back to the top of golf with only time in his way. He already had won three times on the PGA Tour, moving past Jack Nicklaus in career victories. He still had not won a major, though there were indications he was closing in. He had a share of the 36-hole lead at...

A Decade of LeBron

The most divisive and talented male pattern baldness victim athlete we have witnessed in this past decade not named Tiger Woods. Mr. LeBron James has spent nearly half his life being scrutinized by the “official media,” Twitter feeds, Facebook timelines, and armchair pointguard analysts.
