So, the NCAA went snooping around Baylor. And they found something. Granted, it's not trading tattoos for swag, but a lot more calls and text messages than what is acceptable by NCAA guidelines.

But 738 text messages and 528 calls over?




Now, I'll be the first in line to say "But how many other schools are doing this?" But that is not the problem. If other schools are doing it, I guess they haven't been caught. The problem for Baylor right now is that these two programs, men's and women's basketball, have just started making an ascension into the national spotlight. And the women's basketball team just finished undefeated and won the NCAA championship.

And when did this rogue behavior start? With the recruitment of Brittney Griner, the star thug player for the women's basketball team. On the other hand, Baylor coach Scott Drew had the 7th ranked class in 2005 when Baylor couldn't even play an out-of-conference schedule due to NCAA penalties.

Since the NCAA has labeled these violations as "major," with an additional "failure to monitor" nod towards men's coach Scott Drew, the loss of scholarships might as well be classified as pending. Will the NCAA make them vacate wins, championships, or anything else like that? I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

The 1996-97 Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball team also faced similar allegations. They were forced to vacate all conference wins and two postseason wins

The severity of the penalties will also depend on how much the NCAA wants to remember the 2003 scandal surrounding the murder of Baylor basketball player Patrick Dennehy. It also depends on how far back these violations go.

Either way, I think it's time to re-do some 2012-13 basketball forecasting. Baylor might be feeling the pain of this for quite a while.
