Is there life yet in Vijay Singh? It was not all that long ago that the smooth-swinging, big hitting Fijian was a beast on tour, an obsessive practiser whose hard work was rewarded on a serial basis.

Now, it seems the beast is dead – or is he? There has been a little twitch; is he about to rise again?

Singh is a modern golfing great, so good that he won an incredible nine tournaments in 2004, including his third Major (a second USPGA), amassing more than ten million dollars in prize money in the process.

Four years previously, he had won the US Masters with a fabulous display of ball striking, including one never-to-be-forgotten high draw around trees with a long iron to land on the ditch-protected 15th green. At his best, he was quite awesome.

Singh played in 67 consecutive Majors, until missing his start time for US Open qualifying, last year, but injuries and spells of poor putting have taken their toll in recent years, so much so that he has slipped from his number one perch, in 2005, to a current world ranking of 94.

Though winless now since 2008, there has indeed been a twitch. Singh rolled back the years to record a 63 in the first round of the Greenbrier Classic recently, despite being an outsider in the Betfair golf odds.

He was then scuppered by a second-round 74 and eventually finished outside the top 30, but he did shoot 18 birdies over the four days, displaying more than just glimpses of what made him so formidable.

Singh himself feels that he is very close to being really competitive again, but you do wonder whether he will ever get back close to something like he was; not just because he is now 49 (remember Norman and Watson), but because his putting stroke looks so fragile these days, whether holding the long or short putter.

The Open Championship betting page has Singh down as a 284/1 pick, making him something of an outsider for the Claret Jug.
