PLAYERS: Tiger Woods

written By Clifford, Santa Monica      I’m as up-in-the-air about the likelihood of Tiger adding another major win to his portfolio as everyone else at this point; A quick glance of the poll above indicates that roughly 50% say “HELL YEAH!!” while the remainder say “HELL NO!!” With all of his coaching changes, swing alterations and the the ravages caused by Father Time, I’m no longer as convinced as I once was that Eldrick will settle himself down and resume approximating his earlier successes in majors. But I’m among the very few who contends that if Tiger wins even ONE major–especially if it comes in 2013– then I’m inclined to think that he’ll win SEVERAL of them before his career is over–and YES, I think he can still catch (and pass) Jack. And THAT’S because the 800 pound gorilla that he’s been carrying around since the scandal broke  about his off-the-course shenanigans will finally have lifted. which will allow him to relax and be more like the Tiger of old, though not quite as intimidating at age 37 as he once was. But he won’t need to be THAT intimidating (in my opinion) to win five majors in the next, say, ten years. But I feel he has to make headway soon or else, as Greg Norman noted a few months ago,  there are only so many swings left in a body that generates as much torque as Tiger’s does.   As for Rory’s naysayers, I think all of you are crazy. I’m predicting that he’ll win AT LEAST six tournaments this year and at least one of them will be a major–if not two. I think he’s THAT talented and THAT determined—Caroline Wozniaki or no Caroline. It wasn’t that long ago that Rory would suffer Sergio Garcia-like yips with his short game, but in recent months he’s become a great clutch putter and he’s probably the best I’ve ever seen (even at age 23) with his touch from the fairway to the green. Between those two things no one can run away from him on the golf course. On the contrary, he has the ability to run away from the field more frequently than anyone else–a lot like Tiger used to…   And the scary part for the rest of the field is that  Rory can only get wiser and better over time–and at age 23 he’s got plenty of it. Moreover my guess is that as long as he remains healthy and interested, Rory McIlroy will eventually leap frog both jack AND tiger, even if\when Woods passes Jack for majors wins and Sam Snead for total career victories….COUNT ON IT and remember that you read it here!   End, Clifford, Santa Monica
