The camp of 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb continue to search for answers of what happened to the good looking Malibu Moon colt while finishing last, beaten 22 1/4 lengths, in last Saturday’s 2013 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park. Orb, who bobbled slightly at the start, appears to have come out of the race well according to Buzz Tenney, assistant to trainer Shug McGaughey . “Orb seemed to come back fine,” Tenney said on Monday. “He cooled out fine, and we put him on the van and sent him back to Fair Hill (in Maryland) last night. Really no excuses we could see.” “He looked great, I thought, coming out of Fair Hill,” Tenney added. “Going over (to saddle for the Gold Cup), I think we were all very, very confident, and it was disappointing, to say the least. We scoped him after the race yesterday, and he was clean. So far, that’s all that has been done”. After the bobbled start, Orb looked good, running comfortably in fifth position down the back side before dropping back to last on the far turn and toiling down the stretch. I’ll tell you what happened and I don’t mean to say I told you so….I really don’t….but in his last two races (which happened to be my “Race of the Week” in the Travers Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup respectively) I mentioned both times that this horse might have peaked out in the spring and that certainly appears to have come to fruition. He’s just not the same horse we saw several months ago…Plain and simple. I like the Shug McGaughey barn immensely and I have nothing but respect for the entire operation, but perhaps its time they either a) drop him down in company a little…or b) better yet, perhaps pull his shoes, give him the rest of the year off and try again in the next year? Albeit, he dominated in the spring while winning the Fountain of Youth, the Florida Derby and the Kentucky Derby, all hopes of the three year old championship, after poor showings in the Preakness, the Belmont, the Travers (to a certain extent) and now the Jockey Club Gold Cup, are probably gone anyway. I guess what I’m trying to say (for the horses well being) is I’m not sure running him in the Breeders Cup Classic makes sense at this point. You know?
