Engine penalties for over half the field jumble up grid for Sunday's race (3:30 pm ET, NBCSN)

This certainly wasn't the most straightforward qualifying session in IZOD IndyCar Series history.

Going into Saturday's knockout rounds, 14 drivers -- including all 11 with a Chevrolet engine -- had sustained 10-spot penalties on the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach due to unapproved engine changes. As a result, the starting grid won't line up how the 26 competitors qualified yesterday afternoon.

What we do know is that Team Penske's Ryan Briscoe, one of the Chevy drivers, did manage to officially gain credit for winning the pole position by topping the Firestone Fast Six. He also earned a championship point and the prize money that comes with the pole. But thanks to the Bowtie penalties, he'll start 11th.

As the only Honda driver going up against five Chevy drivers in the Firestone Fast Six, Dario Franchitti will move up to P1 and have a golden opportunity to get his season back on track after two sub-par races. Starting alongside him on the front row will be rookie Josef Newgarden, who advanced out of his first-round qualifying group and placed 7th in the second round. But, again, thanks to Chevy's misfortune, he'll go off from P2.

There's been a few tweets from IndyCar journos on site that an official, adjusted grid will not be released until tomorrow morning. In the meantime, here's how everyone qualified today with asterisks next to those that have suffered engine penalties (and if and when we get an adjusted grid, I'll certainly post it ASAP):
