With Tuesday’s announcement that Sebastian Saveedra would pilot the No. 6 TrueCar Chevrolet at Dragon Racing, it meant there are only two more full-time seats open for the 2013 Izod IndyCar Series campaign. Those two seats are both with Dale Coyne Racing in his No. 18 and 19 Hondas. Last year, Justin Wilson and James Jakes piloted those two machines. Wilson seems likely for the No. 18 seat while the No. 19 car is open. Jakes, signed last week with Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan Racing and took his sponsor with him. There’s no word on sponsors yet on either car but Z-Line Designs has been on the No. 18 for the past several years and I’d expect them to return with Wilson. That makes the final seat very sought after. Names like Ryan Briscoe, Katherine Legge, Alex Lloyd, Pippa Mann or another name out there are in contention. It’s going to come down to who can bring the most money which is a huge win for DCR. Coyne is known to put drivers in seats that bring funding ie. Mario Moraes, Milka Duno and Lloyd in recent years. That doesn’t bode well for a driver like Briscoe then. If getting rides were based on talent level then Briscoe would have been signed a long time ago. The problem is he doesn’t bring any funding and IndyCar teams can’t run with no sponsors. Coyne has this car entered and I suspect if no funding is brought by mid-March then Briscoe will be in that car. But, if someone can come up with some money they will likely get that seat. This puts DCR in a role they’re not used to and that’s having people searching for funding for one of their cars.
