We should be set for an epic weekend at the 2.3-mile Barber Motorsports Park this weekend as the Izod IndyCar Series takes to the track for their second race of the season. The season opener at St. Petersburg saw near record speeds and a ton of passing and provided a great race. Expect an even better race and records to fall this weekend around the 16-turn scenic facility located just east of Birmingham, Alabama. The series hosted an open test there back in March and 27 of the 28 car and driver/car combinations posted a lap faster than last year’s track record set by Will Power. In fact, Power was over two-seconds quicker than last year’s lap a few weeks ago as they all should shatter that this weekend. Speed won’t be the only story of the weekend as I’d expect a ton of passing and a very close race. 16 drivers were within a second of Power’s quick lap in the open test as we could see as many as 20 get within a second of that mark come qualifying Saturday. That will provide a lot of close racing on the course with many drivers taking more of a risk there. The reason more drivers take risks there is due to the lack of walls or tire barriers to hit. The track is a bit narrow due to being built as a motorcycle track originally but if you run wide you will just get in the grass and can get back on track. There’s not a wall there to hit when running wide. What’s all of this mean then? We’re primed for a superb weekend. The speeds will be record shattering and the gap between the cars will be closer than ever before with low risk of danger. What more could you ask for?
