Sportress of Blogitude:
For anybody who believes that over the years we have become a more crass, less refined and an increasingly boorish group of fans who attend MLB games at baseball parks, think again. A 1940 report from Life Magazine documents the pummeling of umpire George Magerkurth by Brooklyn Dodgers fan Frank Gernano following a game between the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds on Sept. 16, 1940 at legendary Ebbets Filed. Gernano, 21, apparently was very upset with Magerkurth over a botched call where the umpire overruled one of his fellow umpires on a play at first base during extra innings, a call that effectively eliminated the Dodgers from the pennant race after the Reds won the game. So after yelling “Burglar! Burglar!” at the ump, Gerano took the field and began to rain “hard stinging blows” upon Magerkurth. Reasonable response, right? After all, it did eliminate the Dodgers from the pennant race. An image of the pummeling, via Eye on Baseball: Wow. One question: Any chance this guy is a de...
BEST OF MAXIM
I like Yasiel Puig. I like him a lot, actually. I even ranked him as the top prospect in the Dodgers system for 2013.
However, if you follow me on Twitter, most of what I tweet about him is sort of dismissive. That’s not because I’m not excited about him, but rather because he seems to make people incredibly stupid.
For example, look at the tweets just from the last couple of...
We all knew it was coming, and it's finally here. This is probably the greatest thing on the Internet, at least until the next big cat video hits YouTube.

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp put on quite a show. I just wish the video clip was a little longer.
What I'm wondering is, how did Steve Ames end up winning...
On Tuesday, Dayn Perry over at CBS Sports published a list of the top 10 hitters and the top 10 pitchers for the 2013 MLB season. And two Reds deservedly were included in the rankings.
Joey Votto took the No. 3 spot among hitters, while Johnny Cueto finally received some respect from a national columnist by coming at No. 6 among pitchers.
An important note to remember about...

Let the intra-division play begin. After opening with NL Central teams St. Louis, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh, the Diamondbacks will begin a three-game series against big-spending NL West rival the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field on Friday. The D-backs will not face right-hander Zack Greinke, who signed a six-year, 147 million free agent contract in the offseason, but will see Korean...

Legendary Los Angeles Dodgers announcer Vin Scully went on a legendary tangent last night after reading a Twitter poll to the fans at home. After saying the options "#HittersPark" or "#PitchersPark" he asked the question on every person's mind over the age of 65, "what in the world is hashtag?"
Carl Crawford led off with an opposite-field homer and A.J. Ellis added a two-run shot to back Chad Billingsley's strong season debut and lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-3 victory against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.
Billingsley (1-0) opened the season on the disabled list after bruising his right index finger during a bunting drill on March 15. He held San Diego...
On Thursday, Carlos Quentin started a massive brawl when he charged the mound against Los Angeles Dodgers starter Zach Greinke.
Chad Billingsley made his season debut in San Diego tonight, and Carl Crawford did his part to make sure that Chad got some run support in this game.
In a sight that had to have Red Sox fans shaking their head and asking “where was THAT guy when he signed that contract here?” Crawford took Eric Stults’s second pitch of the game out to left field. Just like that the Dodgers...
