Jacob Turner (credits below) SP-JACOB TURNER (DETROIT)- Turner got the call back to the bigs last week when Detroit placed fellow rookie Drew Smyly on the DL. The 6'5" , 21 year old righty struggled a bit with his control but still had a decent outing against the Cardinals in his one start on June 21st. Turner is currently 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA in the minors and is a top pitching prospect for the Tigers. He is worthy of a look if you need pitching help. SP- DAN STRAILY (OAKLAND)- Straily hasn't arrived yet in the bigs but is very close to being called up assuming the A's trade current starter Bartolo Colon by the trade dead line. Straily leads all of baseball in strikeouts with 156 in only 118 2/3 innings pitched. His minor league numbers show him averaging over a strikeout per inning at all levels. If you have roster room Dan is certainly worth a pickup and stash. He is a huge pickup in dynasty leage formats.  SS-JOSH RUTLEDGE (COLORADO)- Josh is hitting .250 with th...

Game 2012.92: Angels at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 47-44, 3 1/2 games behind Chicago. Alice Cooper threw out the ceremonial first pitch before last night’s game, and from that point on it was Welcome To My Nightmare for young Jacob Turner, who bombed. An outburst of offense was predicted, but I didn’t quite have that in mind (the Tiger offense politely refrained from getting involved). But the good news is that...

Tigers could make second-half run

Detroit's viability as a threat in the American League Central Division might be revealed over the next few weeks. With Sunday's 4-0 shutout victory, the Tigers took two of three at Baltimore to start the traditional second half of the season. "It doesn't get any easier," manager Jim Leyland said. "We go home to face the Angels, and the White Sox follow...

Tigers Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Trade Prospects Like Castellanos

Twenty-five years later people in Detroit are still talking about John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander. It’s the Motor City’s version of the Alamo. It was around this time in 1987 when the Tigers traded blue chip pitching prospect Smoltz (Lansing Waverly), 20, to the then-awful Atlanta Braves for wily, irascible veteran Alexander, who was 36 at the time of the...

Tigers getting healthier

DETROIT -- Brayan Villarreal could be back as soon as Tuesday and Andy Dirks is getting closer. Villarreal, who did not pitch in the three-game series in Baltimore because of a neck injury, was to see a neck specialist sometime before Monday's game. "I feel much better than yesterday," Villarreal said. "I think I'll be ready tomorrow, that's what I think...

Game 2012.90: Angels at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 46-43, 3 1/2 games behind Chicago. The Tigers try to continue their 2nd-half surge with a 4-game series against the redundantly named Los Angeles Angels.  The series will feature neither Justin Verlander nor Jered Weaver, much less a rematch between the two, since they both pitched yesterday.  Perhaps that will have to wait until the 1-game wild card playoff. Instead...

Tigers weekly: Verlander gets back to business

Everyone done panicking over Justin Verlander yet? Between his terrible performance in the All-Star Game and the rumors flying around about Kate Upton, last week was one of the first times that Tigers fans actually seemed worried about their ace. Where was his head? Was Upton going to be the next Yoko Ono? Had his All-Star performance uncovered some previously hidden flaw. Eight...

Brennan Boesch’s Booming Home Run Powers Tigers’ Comeback Over Angels

Everyone has been waiting for Brennan Boesch to hit a clutch home run for months. Monday night, he delivered, as his stunning bomb helped drive the Detroit Tigers to an 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Facing the hot … Continue reading →

Five Angels go deep in rout of Tigers

DETROIT (AP) -- Earlier this week, Mike Trout had a chance to meet Al Kaline, the Hall of Famer who played for the Detroit Tigers and won a batting title in 1955 when he was 20 years old. After another four-hit night, Trout looks like he's on his way to a similar feat. Trout raised his American League-leading average to .355 on Tuesday night with the fourth four-hit game of...

Police Search Comerica Park During Game After a Bomb Threat

Bomb threat called into Comerica Park(Photo courtesy of ESPN) According to the Detroit Free Press, there was a bomb threat Tuesday night that caused the police and authorities to search Comerica Park while the game played on and thousands of fans remained at the event.  An anonymous call came into 911 at about 8 p.m., and authorities quickly went into action with an immediate...

AL Central seeking starting pitchers

Tuesday night, it became apparent that the three American League Central contenders have the same trade-deadline need. A starting pitcher. In Detroit, Jacob Turner the Tigers top pitching prospect surrendered seven earned runs over two innings in a disastrous outing against the Los Angeles Angels. While the Angels were battering Turner, the Tampa Bay Rays with one of the meeker...

MLB executives: Tigers actively seeking starting pitching

After a Tuesday night loss in which Tigers pitching gave up a total of 13 runs to the Angels (7 of which were charged to rookie Jacob Turner), MLB executives from around the league have told ESPN’s Buster Olney that Detroit is actively seeking starting pitching. Among the names that the Tigers have shown some level of...
