Christians
Does anyone remember this? Back in 2005, Ryan Church was quoted on the front page of the Washington post, alluding that Jews were doomed to Hell. His exact quote, ""I said, like, Jewish people, they don't believe in Jesus. Does that mean they're doomed? Jon nodded, like, that's what it meant. My ex-girlfriend! I was like, man, if they only knew. Other religions don't know any better. It's up to us to spread the word," Church said. (Jon being the team's C...

Did Borat write that speech for Church?
  • Church makes no sense...Maybe, he should read a book and spend his time usefully.

It's a good thing that Shawn isn't there anymore - and I liked Shawn Green.
  • Sadly, I think a large percentage of Americans share Church's views. Church is very aptly named, by the way.

"It's up to us to spread the word" People like that are some of the most dangerous people in the world. They think everyone is out to get them and their religion, when in fact all "the doomed" really want is for them to just worship who they want and leave the rest of us alone. Michael Ian Black said it best when he said (paraphrased), "Christians always try to convert you. I ask them why, and they say 'Because we love you!'. Bulls**t, what is love? It's accepting someone for who they are unconditionally. If you loved me, you'd leave me alone."

On a side note, Minaya pulled off an absolute steal here..

Even if Milledge reaches his potential, Church is the better player. Add in a solid catcher in Brian Schneider and tally up another one for Omar.

  • How is he an Anti-Semite if his ex-girlfriend was a Jew?
He just sounds impressionable and not very bright.
(And being not very bright never stopped anyone from being a pro baseball player.)

  • Being a Mets fan of Jewish background, I remember the story, wasn't happy then and not now either but the bigger story to me was that the Nationals have a chaplain with this mentality. Church asked a stupid question but the team chaplain of all people gave the stupid answer. That was the bigger scandal, to me.
To Ghoti00: what do ex-girlfriends have to do w/ it? Sorry, hon' but you're going to hell, unlike me?
How's that anti-Semitic? Are you kidding me?
  • It's sad but true that millions and millions of people revere a god who condemns the majority of the world to hell. Happily, that's not God.
  • I am not particularly religious, but don't all Christians believe that the only requirements to get into heaven are to believe that Jesus is the son of God and that he died for our sins. Unless you believe that, you can't get to heaven. Am I wrong here?
    • I really don't know. But that seems a bit harsh to other religions itself.
    • If you take the Book of Revelations literally, then there are only 144,000 total spots in heaven. The requirements you cite (believing that Jesus is the son of God and that he died for our sins) is a particularly Catholic viewpoint. Different Christian denominations approach this question in different ways. What drivel, all of it.
  • This is why such athletes should keep their personal life and opinions to themselves.
  • My take on this is that Church is an ignorant man who has athletic ability above the norm. What really bothers me are people at Mets.com in the forum particularly a guy named toohigh4u (nuff said right?) is spewing a bunch of Jew hating propaganda, and what is even more disturbing there are only a few who are going against him. Most either agree or joke. This fool wrote "Why should I care about what happened 60 years ago?" His dialogue is truly saddening.
  • Whats upsetting is that the intolerance of people always gets pegged back to one religion or another. I am a happy christian who knows many more who do not share Church's views. However, dumb people turn to absolutes to back up their ignorance. Religion CAN provide absolutes (I happen to think it doesn't). Every religion has idiots who use it to impose their personal agendas on the world, be it fundamentalist abortion clinic bombers or fundamentalist anti-westerners.
The one truth that is absolute here: Ryan Church can hit .280, steal 20, play solid defense and fill in a right field hole. If he keeps his mouth shut, he's a great addition. (to a baseball team)
