The Philadelphia Phillies offense was silent but waited for their moment against Pittsburgh Pirates emergency starter Brandon Cumpton Tuesday night. The Phillies picked up three runs in the sixth inning to chase Cumpton from the game and the young bullpen came through to get the game from starter Jonathan Pettibone to Jonathan Papelbon to pick up a 3-1 victory in PNC Park. Ryan Howard ended his drought with a two-hit night, with an RBI single in the sixth inning to score Chase Utley, and he would come around to score on an RBI double by Delmon Young to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Pettibone had a solid night on the mound, although he threw a lot of pitches early on to set up a night that would rely on the bullpen later on. Pettibone ended his night after 5.2 innings pitched allowing just one run on three hits and six strikeouts. Pettibone was relieved after serving up a solo home run to Pittsburgh first baseman Garrett Jones in the bottom of the sixth inning after throwing over...

Heyman: Dodgers Interested in Utley, Young

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, Chase Utley is firmly on the radar of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Heyman states that it is unknown whether or not the Dodgers have contacted the Phillies about Utley and that Ruben Amaro Jr. is not anxious to trade Utley despite the fact that he is headed to free agency. The Phillies would received a compensatory pick for Utley if they made a qualifying...

Jonathan Papelbon Calls Prospect of Yasiel Puig in All-Star Game ‘An Absolute Joke’

Game 83: Pirates 6 Phillies 5

This game turned on a quick sequence in that went like this: Andrew McCutchen single, Gaby Sanchez single on the next pitch, Russell Martin RBI single two pitches later, Pedro Alvarez three-run homer two pitches after that. That turned a frustrating 1-0 Phillies lead into a 4-1 PIrate lead. That gave the second half of the game a very different tone.  Specifically, it was the...

Steeltalk Q&A talks Pittsburgh Pirates with Sports-Media Icon Stan Savaran

As of July 4, 2013 (9:20 am EST) the Pittsburgh Pirates have crossed the halfway point of the season and display a record of 83 – 52. One of the hottest teams in baseball Pittsburgh went 15 – 5 in their last 20 games and currently hold a 2 game lead atop the NL Central. In a blog I wrote last week I asked what makes this season different from past seasons, which saw the Pirates...

The second half begins

The second half of the season begins tonight, with the Pirates defending the best record in baseball and sending Brandon Cumpton to the mound. That's one crazy sentence. Because of the Pirates' 14-inning game against the Brewers necessitated him to warm up, Jeff Locke's start is being pushed back a bit. Because Sunday was Jeanmar Gomez's day to throw a bullpen session...

International Bonus Money Already Changing Hands

One thing that is new this year on the international market is that teams can trade from their bonus pools. A team can trade for bonus pool money, giving them the ability to acquire up to 50% of their original bonus pool. For example, the Pirates have a bonus pool of $2,426,000. That means they can trade for up to $1,213,000 in additional pool money. What I didn’t know until today...
